Sisters Jessica and Ashlee Simpson got into trouble when they were younger-- for wearing skimpy bikinis to church.
While other churchgoers were decked out in their Sunday best, the singing siblings--whose father Joe used to be pastor--showed up in swimsuits and tiny shorts.
Joe is quoted by MSNBC.com's The Scoop as saying, 'When we were in church my daughters wore bikins and short shorts.'
'People in the church got mad at me for it then, but we believe what is in the heart is more important than what is in the outside.'

Nope I'm in my 40's and yes I wear shirts and dresses to Church with flip flops. God's known me for 40 something years now, he knows and probably doesn't care about my clothing choices.
This is what I was refering to. If you're in your 40's, why do you care what's in style on any given day, let alone when you go to church?
I'm not suppose to wear what is in style cause I'm in my 40's...? I'd still be wearing hip huggers and bellbottoms, knee high boots with mini skirts if I never moved from one style to another.
Looking back I can't seem to find a fashion era that I could have stopped at. After the hip huggers came the disco era with the silk pants and sequined tops, then the razor sliced, acid washed jeans and high hair of the 80's and it then it just got progressively worse.
Frankly I think a skirt and flip flops is pretty modest dress for 2005.
loosely translated..i was trying to make a buck off of em so i didnt care
Any dad that will allow his daughters to dress like he said he did for church is not only an idiot, but is also inconsiderate towards they men, and young men in the congregation.
I hate to be the one to inform any of the women out there but it never ceases to amaze me at how many women's vaginas are visible, either in whole or part in and around church functions. You would hope that dads would be concerned about the issue's of their daughters purity, but they seem to revel in the idea that their daughters somehow have special body parts that should be allowed to be exposed in church.
It is bad enough when you have the over 30 wives that are trying to get back their second childhood, but to see the daughters being taught that it is all ok to dress like whores. I work downtown in and around the prostitute traffic areas and there is NO difference between what they wear and what is worn by many of these girls in church, or at church functions.
With the "wear it down to your pubic mound" pants now coming into the church functions i am now further amazed at how many of these "good girls" are wearing these clothes with no problem from either their moms and dads, or church leaders.
I grew up in a house with 3 sisters and 5 brothers. None of us were allowed to wear anything that exposed even the hint of our sex organs. Our parents had a struggle when the mini skirt and string bikini came along, but they still held the line. Now not only do our young ladies wear bathing suits that completely show their butt cheeks, but now they are exposing the middle area of their public mound.
I have four sons. I wonder what these girls are trying to do? How do i allow my sons to be around these girls without worry that they will be dragged along by these morons?
One really telling thing. Two years ago we had the youth group from the karate school wanting to do a fundraiser. We thought it would be good to do a car wash. I went to the local gas station that i usually fill up my van at and asked if we could do a car wash there. The owner is a muslim from algeria. He told me that he would love to have religious people do things like that at his gas station, but that he had some church people come before who allowed the girls to be out there in string bikini's even though he asked them not to.
It was with great struggle that i convinced him that if any of the girls there were dressed im-modestly then i would send them home. Thankfully all the girls followed the rules. He thanked me later and asked me what i thought about the idea that the church girls would dress the way they did, and they were trying to represent God, and we at the karate school were not representing God but were willing to dress modestly?
I had little to say about that other than the idea that the fathers and mothers of those girls were worthless morons who, like this simpson guy, reveled in the loosness of their daughters.
Whoever allows their girls to dress in the fashion described by that moron of a dad isn't a real parent to their girls, but instead has thrown away their parent card. I think he had motivations of promoting his daughters through their sexuality to fame and wanted to ride the wave of money that came along with it.
Im no prude, and i love the way that God made a womans body. I just think that there are appropriate times and places for everything. A good rule of the thumb for the dress of young women should be, If there is any question as to the modesty of the dress, don't do it.
I don't see how understanding how to be respectful translates into a claim to having "all the answers."
I guess you just find hyperbole exciting.
I personally don't care.
People should wear clothing that is clean and modest.
I kept reading this article and the quote by Pastor Joe and it seems clear the article is wrong.
Pastor Joe did not say his daughters wore bikinis to church. He said "when we were in church work."
Of course the MSM does not know the difference between being in church and being in church work, but most FReepers do. Depending on your POV, its either too bad the article got it wrong; that the Simpson girls never actually showed up at church in a bikini, or ....
.... Thank God they didn't.
It's amazing how a former minister can defend putting his daughters into such skimpy outifts.
You mean Joe was building houses for the poor and the girls were wearing bikinis...lol!
My brethren, do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with partiality. For if there should come into your assembly a man with gold rings, in fine apparel, and there should also come in a poor man in filthy clothes, and you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes and say to him, "You sit here in a good place," and say to the poor man, "You stand there," or, "Sit here at my footstool," have you not shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?
Sounds to me like dear old Dad is hot for his daughter(s).
Our Pastor would tell the congregation that church was not a mall. Dress like you know the difference. His church grew so much, it was splitting at the seams.
According to the tabs, Prince William and Harry are going to be doing a voice over soon for the show.
I'd bet most of them spent Sunday mornings looking around to make sure everyone was 'properly' dressed in the manner the pastor required. All he did was take the focus of your church off God and onto the clothes of it's members. WWJD
Either way, i would rather the church be focused on what the clothes are, than what the clothes arent.
**Of all of God's attributes His Holiness is the only one repeated over and over again by those that share His presence continually
I think too many times we lose sight of that.**
Well spoken 'Rightly'.
I might add. Isn't Godly living 24/7?
Consider what effect we have on others.
"..out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh".
In my primary job as a truck driver, I hear plenty of chatter on the CB radio. By far the most common chatter, that is non-traffic related, is from the women watchers. What sets their jaws a flappin is what women are wearing.
The less a woman has on, the better for their lust filled gawking. They look down into cars beside them and sometimes rave about what they see. They yak about shorts, short skirts, clingy tops, tight jeans, etc.
I remember a driver once that saw a pretty face in his mirror, and was announcing 'to whom it may concern', a 'looker' was coming up beside him. He then added in personal dismay, "Nevermind, she's wearing a dress that is below her knees".
I can't speak for women, but men are very sight conscious, when it comes to what 'trips their trigger' while observing the opposite sex.
I'm reminded of a couple songs from yesteryear (when I listened to such songs).
"hot rod hearts", with a phrase 'tight blue jeans revealing the bare facts', and a Conway Twitty song about 'baby's got her blue jeans on'. The words in those songs speak for themselves.
I am grateful to have a Godly wife, that by being born again, she let the Lord lead her to understanding how to dress modestly. Before, when she wore tight slacks and jeans, my FRIENDS would openly say how 'good' (sexy) she looked. Twenty three years later, at 48, she still has a great figure. It just hasn't been 'out there' for all to see.
In conclusion, what is important to pleasing God? Well, not causing your brother/neighbor to sin is a good start.
