Sisters Jessica and Ashlee Simpson got into trouble when they were younger-- for wearing skimpy bikinis to church.
While other churchgoers were decked out in their Sunday best, the singing siblings--whose father Joe used to be pastor--showed up in swimsuits and tiny shorts.
Joe is quoted by MSNBC.com's The Scoop as saying, 'When we were in church my daughters wore bikins and short shorts.'
'People in the church got mad at me for it then, but we believe what is in the heart is more important than what is in the outside.'

It appears 'Pastor' Joe was crazy even back then.

We will soon be deluged with whacko FReepers who will argue that it's OK to show up naked to church or wearing bondage gear or whatever because (1) it is Pharisaical to ask people to behave with respect during worship or (2) "at least they went to church" as if the community of believers should be happy that someone came to their congregation in order to insult them.

This is the same guy who said about his daughter, "Jessica never tries to be sexy.
She just is sexy. If you put her in a T-shirt or you put her in a bustier, shes sexy in both. Shes got double Ds! You cant cover those suckers up!"

It all depends on how "young" they were when the offenses occurred.
If they were below the age of 14, blame the parents. Between the ages of 14 and 18, blame them all. After the age of 18, blame the kid because at that point you'd expect they'd have figured out how to dress for church.

Not from this Christian you won't
I am disgusted when I see people wearing flip flops
to our Saturday night service
This is Gods house...show some respect
If you knew that God in flesh was waiting on you
at the front door...would you show up
in flip flops or a bikini?
Well you may not see him with your human eyes but he is looking all the same

God's house? The church is not a building, it is the body of believers. Having said that, at the temple shoes were removed as a sign of respect.
For me, it is more important that believers are gathered together to worship, I could not care less what they are wearing.
I have been to too many churches that care more for outward appearances than anything else. I have been to churches that refused entry to the sanctuary because of what the person was wearing, turning away unbelievers and believers alike.

We are in agreement that people who need the Lord should come with what they have....
but these are not those people..people coming casual when they have better things to wear to me is laziness
and yes the church is the body of believers...but the church building also should be respected....

I just want to ask you if it's okay to not wear pantyhose.
At the church I used to attend, pantyhose were required (if you were a woman) and of course men's hair was not to touch the collar of their white shirt (and tie).
I'm sure God places priority on pantyhose and ties.

I've worn skirts and flip flops to church this summer. It's the style right now and what I have in my closet. This is a small country Southern Baptist Church that is filled with teenagers that feel accepted and welcomed. Teenagers that willingly come to Church on their own. We don't fret much on the clothes, but a bikini and shorts is out of line.

Believe it or not, there are places between scrupulosity and slobbery. One need not be advocating the former whilst decrying the latter. "People should exercise decorum." That should not be a controversial position.

I'm wondering who gets to set the standards. Me, you, who?

I'm wondering who gets to set the standards. Me, you, who? I think the general consensus of the community does. You are, of course, free to find a community that suits you.
