Survivor - Guatemala: The Official Thread
Various Websites and my fertile brain | August 11, 2005 | Cuz_it_aint_their_money

Hidden deep in the rainforests of Central America, stand the ruins of an ancient civilization that once prospered, and then vanished. These were the Maya people, and this is the country of Guatemala.

These stunning cities of the past stand as clues to a mystery thousands of years old. While Europe was in the dark ages, it was the Maya who harnessed the knowledge of the stars, and the celestial movements, to create a mystical union of man, nature and the gods. It was a world of great kings, elaborate ceremonies, fierce battles, and even human sacrifice.

18 Survivors will be marooned within this mysterious and rugged terrain.

For the first time, the castaways will actually live within the ruins of a vanished civilization, and they will be forced to embrace the ancient Maya lifestyle.

Join us as the adventure continues with:

Everything is fine here. Power came back on 2 hours before I returned Sunday night. Lots of tree debris but no damage. Evacuation Wednesday was a living hell, but I'm sure you've heard all that on the TV. My little 3 hour drive took over 18 hours with only 2 potty stops. I was really wishing I was a guy on that drive. Y'all have it made when the call of nature strikes.

Good Morning FReepers and FReeperettes! It’s Thursday so that means it’s time once again for your:

SURVIVOR PING ! ! !

The Yaxha Tribe: (blue buffs)
Amy, Brian, Brianna, Gary, Jamie, Lydia, Rafe, and Stephenie

The Nakum Tribe: (yellow buffs)
Blake, Brandon, Brooke, Cindy, Danni, Judd, Margaret, and Bobby Jon

The Losers:
Jim, Morgan

Let’s get right into it shall we.

Tonight’s episode is titled “The Brave May Not Live Long, but The Cautious Don't Live at All”
I believe this refers to the Nakum Tribe “Swimming wit da crocs!” In other words, if you’re brave and go swimming in croc infested waters, you might not be long to this world, but if you don’t take any chances in life you “haven’t really lived!”

So let’s see what other clues are provided. The SeeBS website clues are:
Smoldering heat forces some Survivors to cool off in the water, risking an encounter with crocodiles. The promo has Cindy making the comment: “There's probably hundreds in this lake.” So this clue refers to the Nakum Tribe.

As a tribe attempts to rebuild their shelter, one member takes matters into their own hands and irritates the others. We know that Nakum won the better camp during episode one, so I think that Yaxha is “rebuilding” their shelter. Brian is probably the one who irritates the others.

Causing sleepless nights, an inconsiderate howler monkey drives one castaway crazy. This could be just about anybody. So this clue is of no help.

A termite-infested log becomes a delicacy for some castaways desperate for a change in their diet. The promos also have Rafe making the comment “Termites... they taste good! They're better than those ants we've had.” So we know that this clue refers to the Yaxha tribe.

And from the promos for episode 2,

We are shown only one challenge in the promos. Kind of an Americanized version of a ball game the Mayans played.

In the Mayan version, they used a rubber ball, about 20 inches in diameter. The game was played on a stone “I” shaped court with walls that sloped inward and stone rings suspended high on the walls. The purpose of the game was to pass the ball around, without touching it with your hands (similar to soccer), and try to get the ball through one of the rings. The winning team was usually treated as heroes and given a great feast. The losing team didn’t fare quite as well, however, with the leader of the losing team immediately being put to death. Usually by having their head bashed in.

Enough of the history lesson, as I said, we only see one challenge in the promos. This could mean one of two things:

1. There is only one challenge this week. A combination reward/immunity challenge. Or,
2. The other challenge is simply a mental type challenge, which doesn’t lend itself to dramatic video footage for promos.

I think it’s the later and the mental type challenge is the Reward Challenge. Since we haven’t been given any clue about this challenge, it’s pure guesswork as to which tribe wins. So, I turn once again to my trusty, physic quarter and heads it’s Yaxha, tails it’s Nakum. < flip> Heads it is, so Yaxha wins the reward. My best guess is, tools and supplies to rebuild their shelter. (See how well that works out?)

Anyway, the Immunity Challenge is the ball game on a suspended net, we see in the promos. It appears as if there are separate matches (or heats) pitting the women against women and men against men. With the first tribe to a set number of goals winning the challenge. Now right away, one would think that Yaxha has the advantage with Gary being an ex-NFL quarterback and all, but remember, he wants to keep that fact hidden from everyone else. Then again, Nakum’s men (particularly Blake) are having a rough time with the heat, compared to Yaxha’s men. After weighing all the pros and cons, I have to give this win to Yaxha.

As to the bootee, I think that Blake has milked all the sympathy he is going to get from his tribe and in a dramatic Tribal Council, even his “Florence Nightingale” Margaret will not be able to save him.

Well, there you have it:

Cuz’s weekly Survivor Picks!”

Reward Challenge Winner: Yaxha
Immunity Challenge Winner: Yaxha
Tribal Council Bootee: Blake

Anyway, I’ll be back Monday morning with my always enjoyable “Survivor Recap”. Till then,

Take care,

P.S. The spoiler websites are still in shock over last week’s pick. They are getting quite “gun-shy” about making predictions this week.

FReepmail me if you want added to, or removed from the one, the only, Official Survivor Ping List.

IIRC, the Mayan used human heads for balls in their games...

Close Ken, according to the “MesoAmerican Ballgame” website, “Some of the balls had human skulls at the core. Rubber strips were wound around skulls to form a large hollow ball. Because it’s hollow, the ball would be lighter and bounce higher than a ball that was solid rubber. The size of the balls varied from location to location. Some balls were about the size of a softball and others were larger than a beach ball. The balls could weigh as much as 8 pounds.”

I remember the cute gal (that later became a host on "The View") started losing her hair from malnutrition. Do you suppose it was a lie? She did lose a lot of weight. Would the producers let hair lose happen? That's a bad thing.

Thanks for the ping cuz. I am not working tonight and can actually watch the show live not on tape. I have made 2 trips to the Yucatan and at Chichen Itza walked the ball courts they have there. Very cool. Should be a good episode.

Elisabeth Filarski, now Hasselbeck. The producers have never let the tribes be so malnourished since that season, with the siting of tribes near fish and/or the copious amount of food rewards during the later parts of the season. Survivor Africa never had a "challenge" which consisted of giving the people money and letting them buy food with it.

(It seemed the All Stars had a similar deal whereby alcohol had to be readily attainable. Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

Did you mean to say that Survivor Africa even had a "challenge" which consisted of giving the people money and letting them buy food with it? That is the exact challege I just saw on Survivor Africa being replayed on OLN.

CSI? That's the same time as... APPRENTICE! He's Trumping Trump!

(Yes, of course, it is all Bush's fault..)

The picks work for me; don't really care either way on Blank, err, Blake. He is a player in the game, right?

I really hope you are wrong about Blake, it would cost me money in our pool.

I keep waiting for Blake to rebound, but he just hasn't done it yet. Although he did alright on the spider web challenge last week, I am afraid that set him back physically.

My fav so far is Judd, but when it comes down to it, I always go for the money, so GO BLAKE

My memory may not be what it used to be. Now that you mention it, I think they came up with that challenge on that season precisely because they were basically starving these people really seriously. I should have said that all subsequent seasons have made sure that the starvation doesn't reach the "hair-falling-out" level.
