Jinxed computer users might be sending out a bad vibe, researchers suggest

TORONTO (CP) - Some people seem to carry a computer curse, frustrated by a plague of viruses, hard-drive failures, power surges and software conflicts that appear and disappear without rational explanation.

They blame their machines and suffer the scorn of others who accuse them of doing something wrong. But researchers at Princeton University may have an explanation: these computer users, it seems, could be sending out bad vibes.

"There are some people who seem to have a natural rapport with computers and other complex machines, and there are other people who seem to manage to break everything even without touching it," said York Dobyns, analytical co-ordinator at Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research (PEAR).

The laboratory has for 26 years studied a phenomenon that just might have something to do with it.

Through countless experiments, the researchers have tested whether people, through their consciousness alone, can somehow affect the output of various devices.

The devices - including mechanical and electronic gadgets - produce random outputs when there are no humans around.

The experiments appear to demonstrate a small, but statistically significant, anomaly: study subjects seem to be able to change the output of the machines merely by thinking about them

Our brains operate by wavelengths, it's not much of a stretch of the imagination that the two could interact.

Actually there is a certain amount of truth to this. My Mom ,late 70's, is completely freaked out by machines. She got a new car and the stereo broke for no reason, we bought her a VCR way back, that mysteriously stopped working. I bought her a cd player and that stopped working too.My sister ,who is into all that goofy new age stuff,{she went to Berkeley Psychic Institute, still does "readings"} said this happens because my Mom's nervous/bad vibes traumatizes the machines, her energy actually breaks them. I always ridicule that kind of stuff, coincidence or is it true?

Yes static electricity, small children, careless downloads, cats walking on keyboards, whatever cause problems. But all problems? Oh, I forgot bugs.

Speaking of Princeton University I am fascinated by Princeton's Global Consciousness Project.

How do you explain what it does. It ain't static electricity, small children, careless downloads, cats walking on keyboards, bugs . . . .

calling a computer a 'machine' might hurt its feelings,so maybe we should refer to them as protoplasmically-challenged.

I always think there is sort of a magnetic field around people that causes these problems. Some people just have a stronger wave than others do.

There is truth to it...I am not into all the new age "mumbo jumbo", but you are a human being,{spirit}.. Its really funny with my Mom because it is true, she is intimidated by the technology and her "negative waves "jam the damn machines...its so crazy!

Actually there is a certain amount of truth to this.

When I was in college I dated a very beautiful young woman who could literally stop clocks, or at least watches. She told me that she could not wear a watch because of that ability. I didn't belive her. She reached over and placed her hand on my brand new Longines-Wittnauer, Non-Magnetic, 17 jewel, Chronograph wristwatch ($450 of very hard earned, starving college student cash).

This one (identical to mine, which I still have) is for
sale in the Tokyo Ginza District for $1327.

She held my wrist for about a minute. Then she let go. The second hand was still and not moving. When I said "You ruined my watch!" She said "Don't worry."

A few minutes later, the second hand moved... and about ten seconds later again... and again, about five seconds after that... and agains in about two seconds. Soon it was keeping perfect time again. She said she could not have a clock in her room because they would stop. Her roommate confirmed that. Even the roommate wristwatches would not work after a night in their dorm room... but they would start working a few minutes after leaving her presence.

When we went out, I found that my watch would stop if I put my left arm around her... so I got in the habit of always sitting on her left so it was my right arm that went around her shoulders.

Sounds a bit like my mother in law. She doesn't bother wearing a watch... every one she's tried stops working within a day.

But on the up side, those of us who can't wear watches because of our electrical current make terrific water dowsers...really!

You should have installed a VCR in her house that she did not know about and then let it run. You could have tracked its performance to see if it too would break down.

That wouldn't prove the "experiment". The point is when she "engages" the machine, her negative/bad vibes zap the thing and it doesn't work. If a machine was out of sight, there would be no negative energy directed at it to jam it.....her "fear" of the thing is what causes it not to work.

She could hire herself out to patrol neighborhoods where kids in cars with over driven subwoofers are a problem.
One glance from your Mom at the head unit in the dash of one of those cars and the problem would be solved.

I'd pay bookoo dollars to someone with that kind of mojo going on. =;^)
