What is this, dial a diagnosis? Go see a doctor.
I'm not a doctor, but I'd play one with Nita Nupress!
Periodically I will wake during the night with foot or calf cramps. I take Vitamin C for several days and they disappear.
oh, yeah.... bananas....duh...forgot the banana part. my daughter gets severe leg cramps. gatorade, water & banana usually helps. also orange juice.
I'll agree with the one who wrote bananas, I've always heard that but I never worked out as hard as you do. Might try to lay off a little bit, relax, sip a banana daiquiri.
wait a minute....these 800 books.....were they medical and/or first aid books? (snort...just kidding)
Well, don't know if this applies to you, but I run 5 mi most days in the Texas heat. I added bananas cause I was having the same problem. Worked for me. Drink lots, lots of water. That is all.
i'm moving out of texas.
very humid and hot.
i was on the run from 9 am until just now. up and down stairs.
but i usually do 60-120 staircases per day, so i'm not out of shape.
i think it's: heat, lack of potassium, and water from what everyone's said on this thread.
thanks.
Calcuim. Drink some milk, eat some cheese or take calcium tabs. Always better to get it from food, though. Direct connection between (lack of) calcium and muscle cramping.
I'm going to try these things! What a coincidence. I was working in the garden and greenhouse today and once again a muscle in my shoulderblade is cramping up on me. I just happen to have banana's (with brown spots) and o.j. Gonna give it a try.
The things we learn on FR! :)
One quick note about taking quinine. I took quinine for 16 months to combat severe muscle cramps in my arms and legs.
Quinine will make your eyes and skin very sensitive to sunlight.
shoot....i won't believe ANYTHING until I've read about it on FR!
salt + water = gatorade.
Pickle juice......if you can stand it, it is a trick I heard the Florida Gators used, because of all the electrolytes they were losing from sweating so much. I told one of clients about it because she has a son who plays soccer in AZ and she said it worked for him. It's worth a shot......
You must be young.
LOL! I tell ya, there's a wise FReeper for absolutely ANY topic. I'm thinking of adding vodka to the orange juice. For medicinal purposes don't ya know. heh heh
Another thing to try is eating potatoes. They have potassium as well as bananas.
If there's a Wendy's nearby, you can get a sour cream and chive baked potato from the 99 cents menu.
[I get that and a small chili -- also 99 cents -- then I pour the chili over the potato; high in fiber, high in protein, low in fat, what a meal.]
And like many others have said, drink Gatorade, in case your electrolytes are not balanced.
