Well, I think a bullet traveling at a high velocity might be a bit more worrisome to our soldiers than a smoke.

Judging from your profile, oh forget it. Just stay the heck out of other people's lives.
Isn't it bad enough that they can't have a beer in some other countries. I know, you would be happy with that too.
Having a cig is a personal choice and you are against that. Go get a life in a library. Your a perfect fit.

Going against the flow, I am sure I will get flamed but they do not need to be smoking on duty. Most of these young people are not going to die, thank God. They are going to come home and they don't need a full blown addiction to cigarettes. Most people are not allowed to smoke during work. It is a very unhealthy and dirty habit. They aren't allowed to drink on duty because they might face death or do other unseemly things. I agree that they are adults and if they want to smoke on their own time they are free to do that. The army should, though, be able to encourage good health habits whether it be hygiene, food preparation, hand washing, intelligent drinking habits, or not smoking or at least not heavily. That is not to say that it can run people lives when they are off duty but they certainly can teach and encourage healthy living habits. The army is about teaching discipline. Contrary to popular thought and continuous media hype nasty habits do not equal happiness. Being a slave to anything brings one's countenance down, diminishing self respect. If a soldier is heavily addicted to nicotine what happens if he is out in the field in a long, tough battle to the death? Do you think that the craving for nicotine and the mood and body changes that the need for nicotine brings will enhance his ability to concentrate on kill or be killed? I hope this is just a joke because I hope our soldiers are not being allowed to smoke continuously on duty with many or most doing so. Maybe our soldiers need more orientation toward living and not that they are going to die so live like the devil. Flame, flame away (my shield is up and my breastplate is on).

FWIW, as much as I dislike the idea of folks smoking, a war zone is not what I'd call a good place to deprive someone of their nictotine fix :)
