after what Dumbledore had shown Harry about Tom Riddle, it should have been obvious that TR/LV might be the Half-Blood Prince, and it would have been clear that Harry should ask Dumbledore about it.

Actually, no. The book was less than 50 years old, too recent to have been Tom Riddle's.

I keep wondering about the Sorting Hat. It dates back to the school's founding, IIRC -- did it belong to Godric?

Yes, it did, now that you mention it. In one of the Hat's songs, he talks about how Griffindor removed his own hat for the four founders to enchant.

That's an odd thing for someone to say if he's NOT loyal to Dumbledore. We have been told by several people that Harry has the makings of a very powerful wizard, even though his grades in school may be less than desired. He is, for example, very skilled at DADA. We know he has conjured up a Patronus, which we are told on several occasions is a very difficult thing to do, and not something that dumb luck would help him with.

Except I truly believe that Snape doesn't like Harry because of his history with James. Harry is just like James was as far as getting away with things (he's not as mean-spirited though) and I think that grates on Snape, plus the fact that Harry looks just like James. Snape will teach Harry, he will try and give him the skills he'll need to face Voldemort and the DEs but I don't think he likes him at all.

I understand all that, but Snape can't be stupid enough to REALLY believe that Harry is completely worthless. He's smart enough to know that there's a reason Dumbledore favors him.

Yep. OoTP doesn't specifically say the locket was thrown out (which would be Kreacher), it only implied it (which would be Mundungus.)

I can't wait for Book 7! Started HBP again on the train this morning, reading VERY slowly, and with the assumption that every word is significant.

My vote is on Mundungus. Since Harry now owns Kreacher, he would be able to simply order Kreacher to return the locket and that would just be too easy.

If he puts two and two together and remembers the locket...

I'm wondering about that, too, honestly. I started re-reading HBP last night, so I'm hoping to pick up some more clues. :)

Hmmm...that's a good point, and one that I missed. I am really going much more slowly with this re-reading. I hope that will help! :)

Azkaban as a future location--hadn't given that ANY real thought, but it makes a lot of sense. We haven't seen the last of the creep Lucius, I'm certain of that. Fletcher was arrested, wasn't he? I seem to remember that he was near the end of HBP.

The dementors are going to feature prominently in book 7, I think. All that breeding...

It's in the Order of the Phoenix's best interests for the Death Eaters to think that Harry is incompetent and the beneficiary of good friends and dumb luck, because then they might take him less seriously than they ought.

Good point! Keep an eye on Wormtail, too... Snape mentioned that he has taken to listening at keyholes... on Voldemorts orders, perhaps? Voldemort doesn't trust Snape near as much as he thinks?

Re: Wormtail -- Wormtail owes Harry his life, and that's not an unimportant consideration.

Reading THAT little gem in the book gave me the creeps, lol. Since conjuring a Patronus is such a difficult thing to do, I wonder how the wizarding world would deal with a bunch of baby dementors...ugh. One would hope they wouldn't be as strong as a "regular" dementor. Like you, I'm pretty sure that will come into play in Book Seven. More recruits for Voldy. *sigh*

Dementors breeding?

The picture of that is not too pleasant!

Wish we could have had that before we came up with our delusional idea...that's what happenes when you have to work in 90% humidity.

No! It's not dumb! That's the great thing about all of us chatting is that we can flesh all the theories out. No doubt whatever we come up with JKR will have all kinds of twists and turns that we will never see coming. :-)

And it's really hot here, too, so I know where you are coming from!!

Ewww...just the thought of that is gross. I hope they breed kind of like a cell splitting rather then....the other way....ewww

(I feel like I'm digging up an old thread, but I have just now completed reading the book.)

"Snape also stopped Harry from using one of the Unforgivable Spells, don't forget. He also saved Harry from the Death Eaters."

Not only did Snape keep him from casting 'Unforgivable Spells', he did so in the manner of an instructor to a pupil. 'Keep your mouth closed and your mind clear Potter.' or something along those lines. He was not only showing how powerfull he was, but showing Harry how much he needed to learn in fighting against the dark arts. My mind is still open on Snape, but traitors and double agents are rarely ever considered heroes.

All that breeding...

Some of us have wondered since PoA how Dementors reproduce. There was a theory that had some following which suggested that it's possible those who recieve the Dementor's Kiss become Dementors themselves. Although of course there is nothing to back this up in the books. It was a rather horrifying idea, though.
