The Hobbit Hole XXIII - Let them go! Let them go!
Posted on 07/12/2005 8:11:36 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Let them go! Let them go!
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Vey post-humanist. Does he miss the girlfriend? If so and he's happy in the internet, he can find a way to bring her inside. This *might* be against her will and would lead to her untimely demise....

Oh Crikey! I just realized I'm going TDY and didn't pack a book. (I think this calls for an emergency B&N run....)

Mmmm...B&N...
My siblings are back from Germany! Just talked to my sister for an hour and a half, until the phone died. Too fun.
Once the phone is charged, I'll hafta get the rest of the story...and then start on my brother's side of it all. Then catch them up on my life, such as it is. ;-)

I hope they had a good time. We watched a nice biographical movie of JPII last nite (TiVo'd from the Hallmark Channel, I think) and marvel at the horrors that continent has seen - in recent history, even - and how it formed his message of hope and life. Much food for thought in that film. I hope that BXVI has the same resonnance with the youth. They need a role model who will lead them away from Godlessness and dispair.
Anyhoo, packing up. Will head out soon.

Sounds like they had a great time!

So far she mostly hadn't gotten farther than the first week. ;-) They stayed with German families, who showed them the area and fed them and all. She loved that experience, as I would have expected she would. I didn't get to spend as much time in Bavaria as I would have liked to when I was over there, but it's just gorgeous - and I really miss the food! She was detailing off things they tried and I was doing my best not to whimper piteously...
Next phone call she'll tell me more about the vigil and seeing Benedict and all!

I think they did - except Stephen got separated from the group when they were in Cologne! Yikes! It was in the afternoon of about the second day they were there, and one of the kids in the group forgot his backpack at a Metro station. The group leaders decided to take the whole GROUP back to the station to look for it so the kid who lost it wouldn't get separated...but due to the crowd, Stephen didn't hear the plan and didn't notice that the group got off.
He found his way back to the school where they were staying - he had a paper with the address and mostly walked it, but Margaret said she was just scared to death for awhile. They didn't know he was OK until they got back to the school that evening.

Make it about twenty years in the future. We can hook into the Net with our minds, and somehow his gets copied over. Girlfriend goes questing only to get drawn in further....
(Ok, that sounds a lot like "Otherland", but since you haven't read that series, it's not plagiarism)
Whew! I've been run off my feet since class ended. Whoa - it's after noon? Yes! Lunch!

That story line has been written hundreds of times. It's the same concept as "Somewhere in Time."
Maybe I'll have him get trapped in that little Microsoft paper clip...

And it'll end with him screaming in a Vincent Price-type voice "help me...help me..."

I'm sure that was nerve wracking, but at least Stephen was old enough that he could deal with it. Good, too, that he had something on him with the school's address. When we were in Japan, we made sure each one of the girls had the address of Gina's house as well as her cell phone and house phone #'s. I had them, as well, since I'd have never been able to find her place without it.

Oh, that's evil.
Finally got my lunch heated. Will I get through it without interruption? Hah.

I'm glad he had the presence of mind to go back to the school rather than wandering aimlessly in hopes of finding the group - as crowded as the city was, he never would have, and he might have gotten much more lost than he was.
I still think of him as a little kid, though of course he isn't anymore - he's 17. Hard to believe for me! So when Margaret was telling me the story, I was just inwardly cringing, and glad I was hearing it after the fact!

Heh...last year on her mission trip, wife was one of the group leaders and was in charge of a couple of women who are vey high maintenance. Now understand that one of these women is in her 50s, one in her 70s.
They got lost in Paris. Somehow they split up while shopping and spent like the next 5-6 hours looking for each other. Both came back to the hotel in near hysterics.
The collective response to the Mrs. (from the entire rest of the group) was "YOU LET THEM GO OUT ALONE???"

Sigh.
I did not make it through lunch interrupted. I'm gonna do the whole mom thing just great, it'll be much lower stress than the first week of classes to a sys admin.
