The Hobbit Hole XXIII - Let them go! Let them go!

Posted on 07/12/2005 8:11:36 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Let them go! Let them go!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

See how I *know* I'm on the right side of this argument? It's underhanded and sly stuff like this. It's been underhanded and dishonest from the get-go.

We only may be a few, but we're an honest few. Our new treasurer went with the leadership of big CHEF and set up an account where we are only a signee...Big CHEF and their tax number are the primary account holder.

No one will ever take BA CHEF's money again.

Don't mention pay. Tell them that, while you loved (or at least liked) the job and what you were doing, that because it was in a relatively remote location your opportunities for career development (don't say advancement) and even social interaction were somewhat limited. That's why you relocated.

Good answer Corin.

Always make those 'negative' answers as truthful as you can but carefully avoiding sounding like someone who's difficult to work with. You don't want to complain about the personalities in the office, even if they were impossible to get along with. Always describe (never complain) something their vision of a good employee would complain about, like not enough to do, or, in your case, Corin's answer above.

Heh... I haven't figured out a positive way to negotiate that in an interview yet. ;~D But keep trying!

One nice perk of being a grad student worker, I'm expected to surf the internet when not actively working.

It should be listed in the employee benefits.

Heh...at least this place allows internet access. The last place I worked for didn't. No instant messenger type things allowed, and very limited access to the world in general.

Less mindless surfing would be good for me, I suppose. But taking it away altogether...I'm not sure I woulda liked that much.

Yeah - you don't want to waste time if the tasks they're paying you to do still need done, but working for a place that strictly monitors internet or email, or phone calls for that matter, is really oppressive.

Potential good news on the job front here... I'll fill you in when I get home.

Exactly. And almost all jobs have at least some downtime...expecting people to twiddle their thumbs and wait for the next task is a bit silly. I've known places that even removed solitaire from computers so people wouldn't have that to "waste time" with.

Heh, just ask Penny about that.

Well, you are being very vigilant and VERY diplomatic in dealing with these folks. I'm proud of you for not telling Celeste and all of them to BIOTS!

Funny all the times when something would raise red flags to me and I wouldn't even understand why. This lady tried to make it look like a church event, sponsored by her church, you know? But it was only on further questioning that I found out it was the other support group's event.

It looked so much like a church event that I almost let it go through, but for all the warning bells clanging in my head!

One of the ladies said that I am very discerning. I take it as a compliment.

I've known places that even removed solitaire from computers so people wouldn't have that to "waste time" with.

This was before Internet use became and everyday thing, but as Governor George Allen issued an order that games removed from all state computers. It was even referenced in the movie "You've Got Mail."
