Hey you. As for Costa Rica, I know nothing. Traveling abroad scares me these days.
Good to see you on here. I have just returned from a 10 day vacation and was having FR withdrawal.

Many years ago I visited Costa Rica (1970's) and it was a wonderful experience. Great unexploited beaches on the Caribean side, good food, water purification comprable to the states in San Jose, and lots of Americans holding property and running business. A tropical climate similar to Hawaii.
The way they like to drink beer is with a lime marinated fish dish (cheveche), one taste invites the other till you run out of both.
That was years ago, but I plan to revisit to see how much of the good things are still there.
You and hubby will be back for the '08 elections, right?
And what about a wedding that will be taking place in the Midwest section of the USA? What are you going to do about that? Uh?

I've been six times ans love the place. I have stayed in the Guanacaste region 4 times and in the interior rainforest region twice. CR is somewhat of an anathema to typical Central American countries. Crime seems to be pretty low and public corruption doesn't seem to occur at all. You really need to look into the proerty laws though. They tend to heavily favor the natives and leave foreign interest with little recourse if you run astray. On the up side, land is cheap and the cost of living is ultra cheap. You could live like royalty there on $1000 a month.
A beautiful place, but one word of caution. Do not feed the Dinosaurs.
I will be curious to hear how it goes as my wife and I are considering a vacation there next year also. We know very little at this point.
Son went down there to surf......Some restaurant "scalped" him for a couple of grand thru his credit card #....Other than that he loved it.....
Great place, I'm planning on spending some time there soon.
As for living there, its getting pricey, try Nicerauga or El Salvador for buying land.
The roads are terrible.
The food is great.
The policia are not corrupt.
Pedophilia is dealt with harshly.
Most of the Spanish TV stations broadcast out of the US.
Even the least educated speak a very clean Spanish.
It's a great place to learn to surf.
The interior can be hot, muggy and buggy.
The south pacific coast has a lot of crime.
The north pacific coast is quaint and safe (Liberia).
The Carribean coast is touristy.
Take a canopy tour, any where.
Explore the volcanoes, in Arenal. (Tabacon is a nice place to stay.)
Try to stay in small hotels with good internet references.
Outcasts from the US realty industry are trying to regulate everything.
In another year, property titles will be legally binding, and you will be able to have faith in property transfers.
Most buildings are not structurally sound, so bring an Engineer from Europe or America to do an inspection. (Inspector corruption is rampant.)
Only close on property through a lawyer (this year).
The natives are wonderful.
Drinking and gambling is legal at 18 years.
The natives are primarily practicing Catholics.
My family loved every minute that we spent in Costa Rica.
I recommend Playas del Coco as a good, safe starting place, easily accessible from Liberia Airport.
Your kind of thread.....
Costa Rica was the 'in' place a couple years ago. It is also participating in the real estate bubble now.
Costa Rica is marvelous. I've explored nearly all of it and can't rave enough about the place. I am going to purchase a home there.
"teenyelliott"
On a completely different subject, did you know that,
at first glance, your name looked to me like like
Teeny Toilet?
(Now this is what I call a really relevant response."
I have taken 4 trips to Costa Rica to surf. Never have visited the East Coast. The Pacific side is beautiful and cheap, however if you do plan on visiting, rent a four wheel drive.
We go during the rainy season each year and no other vehicle would be able to travel the roads.
Check out Escapeartist.com. This website has great info on most of the Central American countries for travel and buying property. I hope to see myself running a surf and fishing bed and breakfast in about 10 years on the Pacific Coast.
I heard the women were pretty hot.
Theft is the national sport.
I've been there several times during yacht deliveries through the Panama Canal. Flamingo Bay, Costa Rica is my favorite. Beautiful place with nice people and there is a small ex-American owned restaurant near the water that serves ribs to die for. Do watch out for the poisonous water snakes though. Have been to Quepos, Punta Arenas, Drake, and there is a rain forest island off of Drake that is a definite must see. San Jose is an ok place to fly into, but I wouldn't want to stay there.
