I am interested in the personal opinions of any FReepers who have spent time in Costa Rica. Hubby and I have been doing research into the country to gather information for a possible extended family adventure.
I have corresponded with others who have spent time there, and now I want the FReeper take on it. I trust you guys. Well, most of you anyway!

Haven't decided for sure where to live. Atenas, Tiliran, and Grecia are all pretty attractive. Lake Arenal is awfully nice, too, but that road gets pretty exciting and is a drawback.
I've talked to an agent down there, but I'm probably four or five years from pulling the trigger. I would be interesting in building, although there are some very attractive pre-existing homes on the market. Freepmail me the information about the builder, if you don't mind.

Costa Rica lacks a military. This can be good, but I think some pirates held the National Legislature hostage for ransom in the 1990's?

I have taken 4 trips to Costa Rica to surf. Never have visited the East Coast. The Pacific side is beautiful and cheap, however if you do plan on visiting, rent a four wheel drive.
We go during the rainy season each year and no other vehicle would be able to travel the roads.
Check out Escapeartist.com. This website has great info on most of the Central American countries for travel and buying property. I hope to see myself running a surf and fishing bed and breakfast in about 10 years on the Pacific Coast.

We've already looked into taking one of our four wheel drive vehicles down there, although doing that will be more expensive than buying there. Couple of reasons for that.
I would like to spend this next summer there with my family, and will most likely be inland. Not much of an ocean lover. Love to look at it, but am not willing to take my chances on being food. At least on land, I am the top of the food chain.
Good luck on moving down there. Perhaps I'll see you around!

Wouldn't dream of it. I've seen the Land of the Lost. Them dinosaurs are mean!
Don't forget the Sleestak, they can be a lot worse in the lost cities down there. B-)

You will appreciate having the four wheel drive if you plan on staying inland. You will love it though.
Sorry to hear that you are not fond of the water. The surfing and the fishing are outstanding. When I finally decide to escape down there, I will have a surf board or a rod and reel ready for you once you decide the ocean won't eat you!
Do check out that website though. Lots of great info for many different places.

I've heard that, too. And seeing as how I AM a woman, I can appreciate a thing of beauty.
As a matter of fact, my husband was warned that the women are so hot, he might have to leave me.

Man, I was gonna make a Sleestak joke, but didn't want to look it up to see if I spelled it right. I'm just flat out lazy.
That would be cool if I could just travel through a foggy portal by rubbing some colorful stones, instead of having to go the passport/airplane route. *sigh*

My husband will certainly take you up on the rod thing. Let me know if you plan on renting out boats, and I will take you up on that! I love to be on the water. Just not
in it.
I'm not worried about the ocean eating me, BTW. It's those apex predators that I worry about!
