I've been six times ans love the place. I have stayed in the Guanacaste region 4 times and in the interior rainforest region twice. CR is somewhat of an anathema to typical Central American countries. Crime seems to be pretty low and public corruption doesn't seem to occur at all. You really need to look into the proerty laws though. They tend to heavily favor the natives and leave foreign interest with little recourse if you run astray. On the up side, land is cheap and the cost of living is ultra cheap. You could live like royalty there on $1000 a month.

I have a couple of ins with some folks who have married Costa Rican's, so I am not going into the property thing as the average glassy eyed gringo. I am very interested in getting my kids away from the crappy American pop culture for a while, and teaching them how to appreciate another culture.

In your experience, which area do you prefer?
