A couple of people have already posted that it's an attempt to defeat spam filters - more specifically, it's an attempt to poison Bayesian filters and increase the number of false positives, in the hopes that you'll give up filtering and go back to living with 10,000 spam emails a day. It doesn't work on anything but the most naive of filters, but that doesn't stop them from trying. So now you know ;)
