BOSTON -- New York Yankees right fielder Gary Sheffield got into a brief scuffle with a fan at Fenway Park during Thursday night's game against the Boston Red Sox.
Sheffield was fielding Jason Varitek's two-run triple along the right-field fence in the eighth inning when a fan swung a short uppercut in his direction, appearing to graze the side of the slugger's face with his right arm.
After Sheffield picked up the ball, he shoved the fan before throwing the ball back into the infield. Then he whirled around with a cocked fist, but restrained himself and began shouting in the man's face.
Sheffield did not throw a punch at the fan, and a security official quickly jumped in to separate the two.
How much of a beating must someone take before they're allowed to defend themselves?
Sheffield did nothing wrong here. He would have been perfectly justified in jumping into the stands and flattening this guy.
The police should have arrested the guy and left him in the cells overnight.
Andrew
;-)
No matter what, he's pretty quick on his feet, great footwork.
If he was going for the ball, he can't play on my team.
Sheffield was wrong, imo, to try to punch the guy, but I wasn't there.
No matter what he should have gotten rid of the ball to the cutoff man, before confronting the fan --- easier to hit the fan without the ball. ;-)
"How would he have been able to grab the ball in that position?" -- He was waiting for a bad hop off the warning track! ;-)
Suspended for life ....... or pardoned after 5 years for cleaning up the cheap seats after the home games for at least 200 games.
He has a rotten attitude! I can't stand him.
Gary Sheffield of baseball=Randy Moss of football
man, I tell ya, those Philly fans are just terr- oh wait. never mind.
Why are the fans not accountable. One hits him in the face, another dumps a beer on him. This behavior is offensive, and needs to be stopped.
After the Pacer brawl, I felt the same. When people are physically attacking players with projectiles and physical harm, those people need to be prosecuted and punished severely. The result of the Pacer event is fans are now emboldened to do whatever the hell they want to opposing players, and the players have no recourse. Hopefully, nothing happens to Sheffield here, so baseball does not make the same stupid mistakes that Stern made last fall.
the guy was trying to pull a fast one, he was looking out into the field...nowhere near the ball....and his fist was in a swift uppercut action. It was clearly intentional....not likely to do serious harm....but definitely to mess witht he 'evil' yankee player and make contact with Sheffield's head.
Look at the guy behind the girl who dumped the beer on Sheff and then hid behind said girl. They circled it and highlighted it on Sportcenter last night. Looking at the stands from the field, he was to the left of the two girls.
Sheffield showed great restraint for not hopping the fence and beating the crap out of him. This die-hard Sox fan tips his cap to Sheffield.
Did anyone notice the Sox won the game?
Seriously, what the heck are you talking about? The guy made contact with Sheffield's face as he was fielding a ball in the ninth inning of a BOS-NYY game.
This chump deserved a face beating. I would not show as much restraint as this player did.
Methinks Johnny plans on replacing Bernie Williams next year . . .
That Kenny Lofton solution didn't work out very well.
John Kerry's not a Sox fan. Anyone who claims his favorite Red Sox player of all time is Eddie Yost is not a Sox fan.
Bartman is a completely different situation. In that case, the ball was in the stands, not on the ground. In that case, it's a matter of the hometeam fans not doing something stupid to prevent an out for their team. Bartman was a new chapter of the 'curse', because Alou catching that ball would have meant 4 outs until the world series, instead of 5.
In this case, the ball was a triple in the corner, and this duffus decided to mess with the opposing player. Just like the guy three down from him decided to dump a beer on the player. Classless behavior from idiot fans.
Are you kidding? It was an instant classic. Three taters off of Randy Johnson, two from unlikely sources---Payton and Renteria.
