BOSTON -- New York Yankees right fielder Gary Sheffield got into a brief scuffle with a fan at Fenway Park during Thursday night's game against the Boston Red Sox.
Sheffield was fielding Jason Varitek's two-run triple along the right-field fence in the eighth inning when a fan swung a short uppercut in his direction, appearing to graze the side of the slugger's face with his right arm.
After Sheffield picked up the ball, he shoved the fan before throwing the ball back into the infield. Then he whirled around with a cocked fist, but restrained himself and began shouting in the man's face.
Sheffield did not throw a punch at the fan, and a security official quickly jumped in to separate the two.
Just because i dont like professional baseball, means that i dont know the rules? I played baseball since i was 10 years old all the way to my senior year in High School. i think I know the rules. :P
LOl
you dont. you were completely wrong. watch Baseball Tonight to get the correct information please.
Yea, come on buckeye. You have to take back your "Sheffield=Punk" remark. It's the right thing to do and it will be good for your soul. You'll even sleep better tonight knowing Babe Ruth's ghost will let ya.
If you remember Jermaine O'Neil was attacked by a fan that come out onto the court. O'Neil leveled him and was suspended for I beleieve 30 games.
I think a person making that much money should act in a more professional manner.
I agree. That security guy was quick.
This story is to going to way overblown.
you watching ESPN?
No, O'Neal went into the stands. That's why he got suspended.
Congrats!
Where's Bubba Smith when ya need him. LOL!
well im 30 so its not that big of a deal... :D In High School I did some partying then grew up.
LOL, watch the replays.
If they don't chop the replays to promote the rivalry, you might catch some full length ones.
There's a whole bunch of "idiot" drunken fans trying to scoop up the ball along the short fence before Sheffield even got close to the ball.
Don't get me wrong. I loved playing sports, but I'm not much of a fan. I boycotted the watching the Sox until after the all star break last year. I don't read the sports pages. Sports is just a good excuse to go out and socialize.
But I do enjoy a good battle and the Sox-Damn Yanquis is a good battle.
ummm they didnt need him....
That would on the UC campus. Right? LOL!
Yes, they showed a different angle. But Sheffield still was in the wrong i believe fans do that all the time going for balls. The fan barely touched the bill of his hat. and was kicked out. Was the guy that ruined the Cubs chances a few years ago kicked out? Well... yes he was only because security feared for his safety. Fans are fans and player know then you go to the wall they might get incidental contact. Doesn't give a player the right to assault one of them.
OK. I'll do the Rush/Delay apology. Maybe I should have phrased it differently. LOL!
He was not going for the ball -- he simply took a swing at Sheffield when Gary was in front of him. And fans do not touch players "all the time".
Boston did the right thing in throwing this clown fan out. And I'd feel the same way if it were a Yankee fan taking a swing at a Red Sox. One of these days, one of these so-called "fans" is going to end up seriously injuring or killing a player. It's inevitable.
no its completely different between this idiot and Bartman. Bartman WAS NOT in the field of play. Moises Alou was reaching well up into the stands to get the ball.
In this case, the fan may or may not have been going after the ball and hit a player in the vicinity of his face. HOW WOULD YOU REACT? Probably the same way Sheffield did. He shoudlnt be suspended, it probably wont be considered and that fan shoudl be lucky he isnt up on attempted assault charges.
