BOSTON -- New York Yankees right fielder Gary Sheffield got into a brief scuffle with a fan at Fenway Park during Thursday night's game against the Boston Red Sox.
Sheffield was fielding Jason Varitek's two-run triple along the right-field fence in the eighth inning when a fan swung a short uppercut in his direction, appearing to graze the side of the slugger's face with his right arm.
After Sheffield picked up the ball, he shoved the fan before throwing the ball back into the infield. Then he whirled around with a cocked fist, but restrained himself and began shouting in the man's face.
Sheffield did not throw a punch at the fan, and a security official quickly jumped in to separate the two.
Sheffield DID punch at the fan...with his right hand, whilst holding the ball.
If Comissioner Selig weren't a gutless coward, Boston would forfeit that game for the thuggery of its classles fans.
Ok.
I'm certainly not a Yankees supporter, but if the fan took a swing at him, I don't see how that makes Sheffield the bad guy in this situation.
Leave it to ESPN to have the Pro-Yankee headline. Sheffield did take a swing at the fan and almost knocked over a girl on the left side. Give the girl credit for holding onto her beer!
Beantown = sewer.
the fan was out of line. Sheffield had every right after the first swing, whether it be intentional or not by the fan. It is said umpteen gazillion times that fans cannot enter the field of play.
I hope they get that idiot that threw the beer on Sheffield too.
You dont want to do that to a guy like Sheffield. Dude is a psycho.
Go Bucks.
It looked to me like a drunken fan was trying to scoop up the ball.
Mets=Losers
Sorry, Clemenza.
The Yankee shills on YES network were gushing over Sheffield's "restraint" In my mind the shoving by Sheffield constituted an offensive touching.
-A Met fan
LOL! Yeah right! And it should be retroactive to last years ALCS. HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!
Except his hands were never within three or four feet of the ball. He never made any attempt to bend over to pick up the ball, he was swinging and hit Sheffield.
It kind of looked like the fan was looking down trying to scoop the ball up and didn't see Sheffield coming.
All Fans should learn not to lean over the wall and interfere with the ball during play.
I saw the play, and Sheffield was struck by the fan. Sheffield got in the fan's face, but didn't strike back. And, how does that make Sheffield a punk?
The only punk I saw was the drunk fan.
Fans are out of control. Stupid blowhards who were picked last for teams when they were kids, and now they're nothing but chumps like Tom Arnold on Best Damn Sports Show. That's all they are.
"Sheffield = Punk"
I respectfully disagree. Sheffield played for awhile down here in Atlanta and the guy was a class-act all the time he was here. He quietly went about his business, doing what he was paid to do. We love him down here and we were sorry to see him leave when he did.
you missed it then...the fan probably was taking a swipe at the ball, but he hit sheffield in the face instead...
