Red Sox fans swings toward Sheffield during play

BOSTON -- New York Yankees right fielder Gary Sheffield got into a brief scuffle with a fan at Fenway Park during Thursday night's game against the Boston Red Sox.

Sheffield was fielding Jason Varitek's two-run triple along the right-field fence in the eighth inning when a fan swung a short uppercut in his direction, appearing to graze the side of the slugger's face with his right arm.

After Sheffield picked up the ball, he shoved the fan before throwing the ball back into the infield. Then he whirled around with a cocked fist, but restrained himself and began shouting in the man's face.

Sheffield did not throw a punch at the fan, and a security official quickly jumped in to separate the two.

you kidding? After what happened in Detroit there is absolutely no reason to think so.

Or let me guess, the fans that came onto the floor in THAT situation were well within their rights too huh?

I don't think Sheffield should be suspended either, but he should be fined. Well why isn't Sheffield brought up on assault charges? He purposely hit the fan, you can't prove the fan intended to hit Sheffield. Was that a punch at Sheffield or a swipe at the ball? Sheffield should be fined 10K and move on. If they want to solve this put 4-6' of glass up along the perimeter of the field.

That's nonsense. Even the Red Sox announcers are conceding that the fan was at fault, not Sheffield. As for the fan allegedly reaching for the ball, you're not supposed to grab the ball when it's on the ground and in play like that. And at any rate, the guy didn't even put his arm down towards the ground -- his arm and hand instead went up into Sheffield's face. How would he have been able to grab the ball in that position?

no they shouldnt fine sheffield either.

Sheffield's defense would be self defense due to an unknown threat. And he would get off too. In fact, the DA in Boston wouldn't even prosecute it.

Simply, if the idiot fan doesnt reach onto the field, this incident doesnt happen. You are, AGAIN, only told about amillion times not to go on the field. By reaching over the wall and touching a player, the fan was on the field by the RULES OF BASEBALL. The onus is on the fan. Sheffield acted just as any human would and he was completely and totally faultless and you cant say otherwise buckeye errrr Echo.

I'm not defending the drunk sox fan, I hate them. I personally like the Yankees better if i had to choose cause Kerry likes the sox. But, for consistancy punching a fan should draw a fine. If players knew that maybe it wouldn't happen.

I'm just looking for consistancy, punchin a fan=fine. If players knew this I feel less of it would happen. As to the other side... Fan hitting a player=suspended from going to the game for life

If he hit the fan without provocation, I would agree. But the fan hit him in the mouth first. Sheffield had the right to shove him back.

Thanks for posting the pics. I just watched the replay on tv and the fat POS in the gap intentionally flicked his beer at the baseball player, then tried to play it off. That guy needs to be taken out back and beaten the crap out of.

Sheffield was bent over going for the ball and the fan got him with an upper cut.

That stadium is nothing but trouble with the fans able to grab the players in fair territory. Tear the damn thing down and get a real stadium.

Dude...Kerry is not a Sox fan. He never was. Hes never seen at the park unless its election time, he claimed his favorite palyer was Eddie Yost who never played baseball with the osx, he doesnt know the players names, can not pronounce the ones he does and was very loudy booed when he showed up during the playoffs.

He was hit by a fan while trying to do his job. If the fan didn't try to be a tough guy, none of this would have happened. If anything, Sheff was restrained. And I haven't heard one Red Sox criticize him about it. That speaks volumes.
