I got a call from an FBI agent in my local office today. They also left a business card at my residence while I was a work. They want me to come down for an interview. They will not tell me any specifics except that it is within a criminal investigation.
It is NEVER in your interest to talk to the police about ANYTHING. EVER. You might have the home address of Osama Bin Laden and by the time they get done with their obligatory fishing expedition, they'll be reaming you over a 20 year old parking ticket. If you're not under arrest, you're too busy to talk to them. 1) Shut up. 2) Be quiet. 3) Don't say anything.
This is standard practice for someone applying for a security clearance. Not you, but you have been named as a reference, friend, or in some cases simply a neighbor of someone applying. I would call and find out more facts, which they will share with you over the phone before any undo worrying.
PS. When my neighbors were questioned about me and my clearance application they all came to tell me. They wondered what the heck I was getting into that the FBI would come to people's houses and ask their questions. But it is entirely for the benefit of the prospective employee. If they are asking about a neighbor, don't try to cover up for them. Its part of your job to be honest. If it is about you, then I agree that you should see a lawyer too.
BUT they said it had to do with a "criminal investigation". They also said, after I asked, that I was "not currently under criminal investigation".
I have talked to them three times on the phone. Twice briefly and once at some length. The agent would not budge as far as giving info went.
I am calling criminal defense lawyers this morning.

Oh, we swapped bitter insults and I said they should be tried for treason with the applicable punishment applied.
Did they make a comment calling for harm for any public figure? Did anyone posting on that site do so? It may simply be that the feds are building a case against someone calling for violence.
They also said they couldn't force me to talk to them.
Say nothing. Refuse to comply.
Not that I can recall.
