*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Good Morning, sorry to hear you are feeling bad.
No problem on erasing the Derby tape. It seems to be a moot issue anyhow.

EEEERRRRRRRR......Rocky has a new trick.

I have a big water tank that sits under the fence of his, and Rusty's runs. Even tho it was half full, he has taken to dragging it into his run. It was heavey enough that I had to dump the water, to drag it back where it belonged.

I thought yesterday when I found it moved, not that far, it was just something he did that one time. This morning it was half way across his pen. I hope this does not become a habit....he is so obssesive complusive:).

WEll, I've really come to the conclusion that my mare is not pregnant anymore. I really took a good look at her, and there is no way she can have a foal inside. Her underline is nice and tight and sloops up at the back like a horse in good condition would look. Her sides are not bulging out at all when you look down her from the front. Even with Dot who was a small foal, the last month you knew she was pregnant from her shape. It's just not there this time.

I will wait till Thurs, her due date, but unless something major changes which now I do not expect at all, I'll call the vet. I need to take Harley in anyway to get some shots for the Tx. trip, and I'll take her too.

I'm remembering her behavior after she had been here awhile when she was showing all signs of being in a heat cycle. I know I read that that can be normal, but she was really really showing heat signs.

I am going to be very very surprised if she has one. I just can't figure out why three months ago there was a live foal in her, and how I could have missed her loosing it. But I really think she has.

LOL, fun for him I guess. I'm filling it up now all the way. We'll see just how strong he is.

I know it seems implausible to have missed her losing it, but at this late date I don't see how you could miss it if she was still pregnant.

What was the test method three months ago? Was she palpated?

~Might~ she have not been pregnant then either?

I went ahead and called the vet. I really need to know. Hopefully she will call back this time.

The foal Cadence that you've seen me ponying from the paint played in her water trough from the beginning. Would stand two feet in and just paw and splash. Would crack even those heavy duty rubbermaid troughs.

I'm sure sorry.... a year is a long time to wait to just end up disappointed.

She was palpated. The vet said she had hold of its leg, that it was laying on it's back. She said it was small, but not to small to raise concerns, and it was alive.

It sure is disappointing. If she hadn't been pregnant at the start it wouldn't have been so disappointing. But to have one 3 months ago, and now nothing....maybe I'm just down because I don't feel so good. But this is really bumming me out.

Hard to imagine she could be wrong about that.

Do you wonder about fescue? I know you intentionally took her off of it, but is there any other opinion out there about when is the right time?

I guess there's actually lots of things that could have been wrong, something that wasn't right with the foal for whatever reason.

I wonder if there's any way to know now.

You're having a run of bad luck, it's OK to whine about that.

I had her checked when she lost that last one, and the vet, the one that I like so well that died, said she had no problems, that it was probably something wrong with the foal. This vet when she palpated her said the same thing. Nothing they can feel or see, seems wrong with the mare.

Everything I've read, and been told is the last 3 months get them off fescue. And I'm not even sure if there is any down there anyway. I was just been sure, and I moved her closer to 4 months from down there, just to be safe.

A few other things I have been observing about her....she is drinking an inordinate amount of water. I'm filling her water trough 2 times a day, and it's the size of those muck buckets with the rope handles. You know what I mean? She is drinking so much that the wet spot where she pees, never dries, she is peeing so much. Does that mean anything?

Can horses be diabetics? Would that cause them to loose a baby in the last few months?

Another thing after Dot was weaned, Belle had a bag with milk for about a year. Is that normal? Could she have some kind of hormone problem?

Can horses have the RH negative blood problem like people can?

That is a lot of water consumption... I use two of those muck buckets for three horses, and we fill them once a day, and that's just to top them off.... they really could go two days. Does she have a salt/mineral block? Does she go through a lot of salt?

The other questions, I really don't know. I hope your vet comes out and you can ask her.

They all get minerals in their morning feed. She licks all hers out of the bucket, the others will usually leave some.

I thought she might have been drinking like that out of boredom. She was use to running in pasture you know, and now she is in a run, and only gets turned out in the little pasture behind my house a few hours a day.

Rocky will drink alot if he doesn't get turned out enough, I guess now he's just going to drag the trough around:), and he's been getting out alot too. Crazy horse.

I do hope she is still pregnant..........
As for Rocky, he is having himself a blast!
I couldn't tell you how much our horses drank, thay all have automatic waterers so it just gives fresh whenever they need it.
The colts were laying down with the goat this morning, they are getting along great.
We seperate the colts now for feeding, and they are eating what they should be for already weaned colts. As well as hay and fresh grass. : )

I wish I had an answer... I wish I knew there was an answer.

On Rocky... have you ever tried giving him toys? My stallion liked to play with anything that was hanging on a rope. A ball, a bucket... anything he could bang around. We hung a plastic bleach jug from the rafter of his stall, and he'd bang it so hard he'd sometimes get it hung up and wrapped around the rafters.
