The Hobbit Hole XX - And take the hidden paths that run...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 03/05/2005 11:51:13 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And take the hidden paths that run...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I loved it. I had read the manga first and liked that better. The show is faithful to it but somethings are just better in a different medium.
I like Bleach even though it suffers from the usual Shonen action problem of sloooow plot.

Bleach manga or anime? The anime's pretty fast-paced. At least compared to the manga.

For Beck, I just didn't like the vulgarity right off the bat and the story didn't seize me.

The LAST time they won my greatgranddad played for them.

No kiddin!? There was a commercial here on TV that showed a couple going to the game with their young son, when the sox won in 1918. Then it showed him going with his sons, then the sons as they aged, then those men taking their sons, and the Sox kept losing. Then this year they had these young men as VEY old men FINALLY getting that World Series win. It was vey cute.

They had trouble pulling it out because the 5cm-long invertebrate retracted into the nostril and disappeared, the journal said.

That don't sound good!

Same friend walked by Tom Cruise and Wilfred Brimley in "The Firm." Everytime we see it we'd say "there goes Suzie's butt..."

The closest I've come to Hollywood stardom is Marl's cousin, who ran the all-night bump shop to fix up cars wrecked in filming "The Blues Brothers". Didn't make it on-screen, but his name is in the credits, somewhere.

I still think that movie holds the record for automotive mayhem.

Rutroh... apparently that woman that found the finger in the chili at Wendy's has a history of lawsuits against various fast food chains.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/1380222/posts?page=56

I still wanna know if Wendy's returned the property to her after they investigation. They should have given her the finger. :-)

I Gave Her A Ring by Steven Fromholz

A chip of a diamond in ten-carat gold,
I hocked all my dreams. All my secrets I sold.
I brought all the love this poor boy could bring her.
I gave her a ring.
She gave me "the finger".

We had talked to the preacher and to her mom and dad.
We talked of the future; Oh, the plans that we had.
I sang all the love songs this poor boy could sing.
Must not of liked what she heard 'cause she gave me "the bird"
When I gave her my ring.

I gave her a ring.
She gave me "the finger".
I said, "Babe, that's the wrong one,"
When she showed me the long one.

The look in her eyes said I need not linger.
I heard the fat lady sing when I gave her my ring
And she gave me "the finger".

She flipped off our love.
There ain't nothin' crueler.
So I carried that ring
On back to the jeweler.

He said, "This ring is like love, son. There's no guarantee.
Like when you gave it to her, I'm gonna give it to you
When you give it to me."

I heard the fat lady sing when I gave her my ring
And she gave me "the finger".

I have very few brushes with greatness. I saw Mr. Howell in a giftshop in Canada once... whoo hoo... Cristie Brinkley and her husband whatizname showed up to tour my ship on a day when I was off duty and wasn't there... George H.W. Bush was on my ship on the patrol exactly before I signed on board. [sigh] Dammit.

The most famous person I've ever actually met and shook hands with was Colin Powell. Quite apart from the reception he usually gets on FR, I actually really like the man. He has a certain presence in person that is remarkable. Say what you like, but he's a heavy hitter, and I shook his hand and saluted.

My mother once insulted Robin Cook, the writer of medical thrillers, to his face at a hotel. Closest I've come to greatness. Except, of course, my own inate qualities.

Let's see, brushes with greatness... I saw Bart Starr eating pizza at the Pizza-by-the-Slice restaraunt in O'Hare airport.

Oh, Rose and I walked past Roger Zelazny in the hallway during Armadillocon here in Austin, the year he was guest of honor.

Just for giggles, I bought three of these for $30 each from Sportsman's Guide. It's government surplus, and has been sitting in the original plastic bag since the early 1980's.

Two of them are Camillus, one is Ontario. All three have the very desireable safety feature of a metal backing that also protects the tip of the blade, and you, from unintended contact. Camillus still makes this knife, as can be seen here, with the somewhat cheaper, and riskier, all-leather sheath.

The leather is the big loser after all these years, drying out and becoming almost white. Still, there was enough acid left to leave little spots of rust on the steel. Plus the usual green mildew around the brass parts.

I picked the knives up mostly as a military collectible. The real challenge is restoring the leather. So far, lots of saddle soap seems to be doing the trick. After that, I'll work in a preservative wax.

Damn... I used to have one of those, or something darn close to it, that was USCG issue at the time. Traded it to a Marine buddy at the time for a knife that turned out to be kinda crummy.

Dang it.

Sigh... Zelazny...

I rec'd the Amber books for my 12 year old brother. Dad's going to re-read to check them over. Hope he thinks the bother's ready.

I don't even know who Bart Starr is/was.

Heh... almost forgot about the time I found out that my hangout in Astoria was also the big hangout for the crew filming "Short Circuit", including Steven Spielberg. But as usual... I had no clue at the time.

Just like how Jennifer Lopez was hangin' out at the Sunset Grill in Gig Harbor for some weeks filming one of her disaster movies with wazzizname... and apparently I was there the whole time and never got clued in.

[sigh] Just call me clueless. :-)

Let's see, I discovered Zelazny in '76 or '77; found and read a hardcover copy of "The Hand of Oberon" in our local library. Liked it so much that the next time I got to the nearest bookstore (100 miles away) I bought every Zelazny paperback I could find that looked as if it was part of the Amber series. Wound up with the four that were in paperback ("The Courts of Chaos" wasn't out yet) as well as "Lord of Light" and "Doorways in the Sand" (they had similar cover designs, you see).

I was 12 or 13 at the time.

Oh, Bart Starr was quarterback of the Green Bay Packers during the 60s, when they won five championships and two Super Bowls (aka "The Lombardi Era").
