There are things I just cannot bring myself to eat because I think they are gross. There are things I won't eat because I don't like them. Then there are the things that I have never tried.
That is nothign compared to my kiddo. His food has to be beige, and non-sticky or messy. A peanut butter sandwich is good because the peanut butter is encased in the bread. Nice and neat. Jelly is a no-no because it leaks.
It really has nothing to do with flavor for him. I was about mortified when we mooted with wneighbor. She fixed him a "tostada" - tortilla with ground beef, and shredded cheese. He refused to even try it, and made a face and spit it out onto his plate before it touched his tongue. The only item he had never tried on it was the beef. He ended up going without dinner. I felt horrible about it.
I hate green peas. I don't mind the soup, but I hate canned green peas.
My mom used to make me sit at the table till I ate my peas and I would sit there for hours. (I can be rather obstinate too.) It was a battle of wills and I usually won.
Then I learned to eat everything but my peas and ask if I could be excused. My mom would say "After you eat your peas." At which point I would stuff every pea in my mouth and run either to the bathroom to spit them in the toilet or outside to spit them in the shrubs. I would just make it before throwing up, but I got pretty good at it.
When I grew up, I swore I would never have a green pea in my house. And wouldn't you know...Joshua loves them.
I don't care for many canned vegetables. But peas I enjoy if they're fresh or frozen.
What I can't stand is cauliflower...gag...
Hey, there IS something I don't like. Canned peas are icky.
Like I said, my family never really did the "you must eat this before you can have dessert or leave the table" thing. But if they had...I'd STILL be sitting at the table when it came to those things. They made me literally gag.
I can eat them now if I have to, but I don't care for them.
I love cauliflower!
I hate canned peas too. Eventually I learned to just swallow things like peas and beans without chewing. That's when I started having a pitcher of water by my plate...
I can't stand their texture. The way the mushy inside pops out when you chew 'em. Kinda like you mouth is full of popping zits.
egads, what a mental image.
Exactly...I had that mental image the whole time I would try to eat them. So you can see why I couldn't! LOL Even when I was a kid, I knew that it was a gross sensation.
I opened up a can of beef soup the other day from Aldis and found it was FULL of peas. I just stuck it in the fridge for Steve.
But I really don't mind split-pea soup.
For me it was partly the texture but mostly the sweetness. I like sweets...but those shouldn't be sweet! They add extra sugar, I think. Same reason I never cared much for blackeyed peas when I was little, though I can eat 'em now. And some canned beans - beans cooked from dry are totally different, IMO.
I decided that this battle was puny in the grand scheme of things, and I didn't need to fight it. She was old enough at that point that if she wanted something different than we were eating, she could fix it herself. Since that time, she's become a little more daring in her food choices, but I haven't pushed them. Someday she'll eat more veggies and fruits. Until then, I just make sure she takes a phyto-nutrient supplement, and a multi-vitamin.
So, basically if the zit's already popped, it's not a problem for you?
ROFL!!!
Yeah...that's right.
;-)
As a kid, the only way my mom could get me to eat cauliflower or broccoli, or any vegetable for that mater was to smother it is cheese.
With elf-boy, he doesn't like melted cheese either. :-/
I just always wondered, if Mom knew that half of us were going to sit and stare at our plates, why did she make things like chili (some won't eat spice, some don't like the way the ground beef tastes, some don't like beans). If she loves it, she should make it for herself for lunch or something.
Bologna is another thing I don't like. One of very few things, as I've said. I can eat it fried...but even then it isn't really GOOD.
I am not a big fan of beets either now that I really think about it.
I've eaten everythin from dog, monkey, bat, snake, balut, turtle, goat, eyes, inaards, raw fish, kimchee... but the only thing that made me gag was the smoked squid we got a hunk of everyday when I was attached to the ROK Marines...
oh... and I hate pickles and relish on a hamburger or hotdog... can eat 'em alone tho... funny that...
