when i hit enter to post at fr there's a delay of 5-10 seconds. i look down at the lower left hand and it says:

connecting to free republic... transferring data from tinypic.com... transferring data from johntrapp.com... transferring data fromphotobucket.com... transferring data from homepage.mac.com...

none of those are my doings.

i have 6-month-old compaq, 64, running windows xp.

i have zone alarm which routinely notifies me of children coming and going into and out of the house.

i have ad-ware and use it weekly.

i have spybot and use it weekly.

they've eliminated a lot of stuff.

do i have problem?

thanks, ken

If you can see the sky, broadband is available.

both have problems: grey boxes pop up and say that the address cannot be found.

This is a problem that many are having since spammers were forced to change their methods a few months ago. Many of them now tie up the DNS lookup because they post their crap from new domains they created just to send spam from unidentifiable sources.

Several times a day, we get this "XXX can't be found" garbage, and it's mostly because of spammers. Funny thing is, because most ISPs are now blocking Port 25, almost no spam is getting through, but in its place we get this "can't be found" crap.

Pardon my crappy language; I'm in a mood over this.

ZoneAlarm a firewall program that is way too sensitive to pings and other attempted intrusions unless you tone down the alert setting. I use it as well, it's a good free program, so you get what you get. FYI in case you really needed to know.

That's very interesting. How long have you been seeing children coming and going like that?

Satellite is available I think almost anywhere. I’m lucky living right next door to a massive fiber hub. I log a average of 3-3.5megs a sec. Which is just plain crazy.

I looked into DirecPC. For me, it's too expensive (as I recall 200 hours per month for $130). Also, from what I've read (and been told by former users), DirecPC has other cons. Latency, a bandwidth limit - exceed your download limit over a given period and you're dropped to dial-up speeds, etc. I may be wrong about these cons, but the cost, for me, is prohibitive.

Why, if you have Firefox, are you still using Internet Explorer? What a piece of junk. I'm still using the plain ol' Mozilla package (with email so I don't have to use MS Outlook Express) but I stick with what I like...and I don't like IE. :o)

BTW, if those grey boxes say 'not found' it's probably because the bandwidth has been exceeded or the image has been removed from the site to which it was uploaded.

Install OS X on your Compaq. If that doesn't solve your problem, buy a Mac, a Saab, a Leica, a cottage on Nantucket and implode in a supernova of self-absorbtion. That often does the trick.

The other thing I've heard about DirecPc is that you can't "router" the signal without special equipment (besides the router itself).

I never cared much for DirecPC or Starband.  I haven't heard much about this one, but their satellite technology sounds promising.    WildBlue Communications - Official Website of WildBlue - Satellite Speed Internet

My advice is to not post vanities asking for computer help unless you want to deal with jerkoffs telling you that whatever you have sucks, and that if you want to fix your problem you should use the stuff they use because it sucks a lot less (never realizing that other people use the same sucky stuff you use with no problem).

My computer is smarter than me. It let's me do what it wants me to do. If I push the envelope....it scrambles and shuts down. I've learned to accept that it doesn't want me to get too uppity. We have a love/hate relationship.
This thing is turned on right? You can see me, right? Helloooooooooooo!

When I looked into them for a client a few months ago, there was no quota, and there was no download limit. If you had your own equipment, it's $89.95 a month - unlimited hours. Latency is always a problem, but ir's still a lot better than dialup.

Um, that would be "no" unless you're stupid and use the USB-only model of the hardware. If you get the Ethernet-connect version, it's the same as any other broadband type.

USB "modems" suck.

That is probably your problem, my machines, which run OS X, have no such issues.

Now you've done it!
