I like feeling wanted, but over the past several months I've noticed I'm getting pinged for things that I don't know (and unfortunately don't really care) about.
The only ping list I remember signing up for is PJ's DUmmie FUnnies.
Most of the other stuff is interesting, and it's nice to be invited into conversations, I'm just wondering if this is a common occurance with FReepers...or am I just odd?
And really most of this stuff didn't start until I started with DUmmie FUnnies... or maybe that's the only time I really started noticing it.
Any answers?
Thanks
No. Just the scene in the movie where he finds his name in the phone book.
What are you, new? That isn't the way it works at all... now begins the mocking and making of fun! ;~D
Unfortunately, your vanity post wasn't sufficiently mangled to interest my "verbal mayhem" ping list. Couldn't you add a few interesting (or dirty) misspellings? ALL CAPS is amusing occasionally ... or no caps at all even if you say president bush went to moscow russia and read war and peace on thursday, bless his bowels.
Snore.
Inferring.
yeah, that too :)
ROTFLOL!
I am getting NONE of those, thank God.
Fancy meeting you here...
Is that you Timmy? ;)
Remember what happened to this guy. LOL
FReep mail me if you want to join the list.
Lol!
Sheesh! I feel left out. No one pongs me.
Oh, I turn up all kinds of places. Just don't tell my husband.
Pong!
Stop Pinging Me! (Vanity)

Why is it whenever one posts a reply on a thread for a particular topic, other Freepers feel the need to "ping" you for everything under the sun?
It seems as if anytime I post a reply on a thread, 15 people add me to their "ping" list. Ok, maybe 15 is an exaggeration, the exact count was probably 10. These "ping" lists can and usually are for something unrelated to anything that would remotely interest me. Not always, but most of the time. And it's darn annoying since 9 times out of 10 I don't know the person pinging me from Adam, and they're "pinging" me to a thread that doesn't interest me.
What is it with "pinging" people anyway? Is it some "status symbol" to be on someone's "ping list?" Does someone say "hey, look at me ! I'm on the cool ping list!?" Is there some contest running to see who can get the biggest "ping" list going? Is there some sense of pride in having a bigger ping list than everyone else? "My ping list is bigger than yours, Billy! Nyah Nyah!"
Is this like selling girl scout cookies in the office? I mean, everyone knows when girl scout cookie season is, and if you're selling, they're finding ways to avoid you so they don't get their arm twisted into buying tasteless, crappy cookies.
It's like being in Amway hell for crying out loud! Everyone knows you're selling, that's why they're ignoring you! "Hi Fred, this is your old friend Bob. Are you satisfied with the income you're making? Do you want to make $100,000 a year or more? Do I have an opportunity for you!" AAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!
Who creates these "ping lists" anyway, and how does one block them like an unsolicited telemarketing call at dinner time? There's nothing worse than getting home from work at 7pm and *finally* sitting down to dinner, when the damn' phone rings. It's usually someone trying to get me to switch my phone service, sell me insurance, or worse yet vinyl siding for my house (I live in a brick home. Who in the hell would put vinyl siding on a brick house?) Where's my Ping-ID? Where's my "Privacy Manager" for FR?
That's what all these "ping" lists have become: telemarketing SPAM that interrupt my quality time @ FR. It's so bad, I can no longer find real "non-ping" posts intended for me from others who are following up or replying to something I posted on another thread.
I don't know which is worse: the weeds in my lawn from all the spring rain we've had, or these darn "pings" every time I log on to FR. Both are frustrating, they seemingly come from nowhere, and I have no idea how to get rid of them!
Someone please make the pinging stop!

DID I ASK TO BE ON YOUR PING LIST?

Apologies for the vanity post. But I want to rant a bit.
In the past few months, ping lists have proliferated to the point of annoyance. And it is especially irksome to find oneself on a list without having requested inclusion.
There's a word for this: .
Ponder this question, Chester: Did I ask to be on your #%&@ing ping list? No? Well, then. Draw the logical conclusion. If I wish to be on your ping list, rest assured you'll be the first to know. But while you wait with bated breath for my entreaty to be a party to your wisdom, I'll thank you not to make the assumption that I consider your blog indispensable.
Personally, I'd like to see pinging stopped entirely, via the placing of a limit on the number of people a post may be directed to -- preferably one, but no more than five, in my opinion. But failing that, it should at least be the case that unsolicited spam has no place on Free Republic.
