For the last two days my AVG 7.0 anti-virus program has been prompting me to download the latest update, but when I try, nothing happens for 10 - 15 seconds and then a pop-up tells me my internet connection (DSL) has failed. Obviously, it hasn't. Anyone else having the same problem or have any advice? AVG's technical support for the free version is only a list of FAQ's and I didn't find anything there.
Are you running a firewall as well? Zonealarm maybe?
What operating system are you using?
Same here. One PC updated OK last night but today this one just times out. I believe their servers are overloaded.
No firewall, DSL through a router, Windows ME, no previous problem.
I have been having the same problem for a week or so myself. I do use Zonealarm, but it never caused problems before.

BTW you can manually download the update as a ".bin" file but not a hit of what to do with it after download(!)
You can start the update manually and tell it where to go for the file. However I can't even get the .bin off their site which is why I think the problem is at their end.
IIRC there was also a conflict between AVG & Roxio's CD burning software (if you're running that).
On the other...it just hangs untill it fails. I try again the next day and it works fine. I think their server is a little buggy these days.
What I do sometimes is to run the update manually. If you need to do this it's easy. In your options, set the program to ask for the source of the update. Then with the Control Center open, click on the hyperlink on the left side panel that takes you to the AVG homepage. When you get there, look for a link on the left that says, "I need help". Click it and scroll down for a link to the latest updates. Download them and then run the Update manager. When asked for the source, browse to where you saved the files you downloaded. After the update completes, delete the downloaded files.

I have to assume you mean no noticable problem. ME was the worst OS of any kind ever released. Best thing I ever did was go to XP.
I meant no problem with the AVG Update process. I've had plenty of problems with ME in the past, but with SpyBot, AdAware, Windows Wash and RegSeeker, I seldom have any now. XP will have to wait until it's new computer time.
I figured as much.
Yeah, thesee days it is usually cheaper and easier to just get new HW.
I've started to lay the groundwork to do just that. I've had about enough of ME. I've reinstalled it 3 times this week and I still get "Explorer.exe has caused a problem with kernel32.dll" at start up..then freezes and several programs I need simply will not run from CD any longer.
I just need to figure out if I want Home or Pro version. Since I will have to put it on two PCs...I'll probably have to get Pro. I believe the license allows 1 or 2 PC installation where Home does not.
Make the move -- just remember that Pro is going to be more of a hassle to maintain. It i really designed for businesses that have LAN admin departments.
Google 'regseeker', download and run it. It found over 1100 invalid registry entries the first time I ran it. It took a little courage to press the delete key, but it never caused any problems and solved many. It has a back-up feature just in case. Also, Firefox did wonders for surfing.
Yeah, I guess Home is the way to go. I'll have to shell out another $45 or so for the second license for the other PC on my home LAN. They're both PIII/866 machines with 384Mb RAM so it should run ok on them.
