Just like some of its owners....

Wow. Throw in a bluetooth card for wireless keyboard and mouse, and that's one cool little machine.

So it has VGA capabilty. Does that mean you can effectively use a spare VGA monitor laying around the house?

Not being Apple wise, what kind of mouse and keyboard connectors does a Mac use?

Foe same price you get a Dell with 512MB Dual Channel DDR SDRAM at 400MHz, 40GB3 Ultra ATA/100 7200RPM Hard Drive and most importantly a 17 in (16 in viewable,.27dp) E773c CRT Monitor!

This Apple doesn't even have a monitor.
You gotta go spend all that extra money to buy yourself a monitor for the Appe.
Comes free with the Dell.

Its height is half the size of an iPod mini. Jobs calls it "BYODKM" -- Bring Your Own Display, Keyboard, Mouse.

Which will raise the price considerably.

It plays DVDs, burn CDs, and is very quiet and tiny.

"It rolls down stairs, alone or in pairs, rolls over your neighbor's dog,
It's great for a snack, it fits in your pack, it's log, Log, LOG!"

Just damn.

If you want on the list, FReepmail me. This IS a high-volume PING list...

I've been wanting another Mac; this'll probably make me go get one (that, plus the fact that the kids have been hounding me for more than a year to get another computer to replace the old boat anchors I've saddled them with.

Price of a Dell Dimension 3000 Desktop w/2.8 GHz, 512 MB RAM, and a 40 GB hard drive: $549. For an additional $169, it goes up to a 160 GB hard drive. No telling what eMachines will bring to the table.

Mac's simply outclassed performance wise.

We have 2 Sony VAIOs and a Dell in our house. Both Sonys have been back to the factory for repairs. The Dell is 3+ years old and we never had a minute worth of problems. Never had a virus. Never lost any data.

As far as Apple products go, I believe if commodity priced hardware could run the software and the marketshare increased, viruses would be created and propagated.

BTW, my first computer was a Macintosh Plus. I loved it for all the right reasons. All of my employers since then have had Windows products. I've made my living writing client/server software for a long time and think Windows is just fine.

Most people who buy computers (99.99%) DON'T know squat about the inner workings and couldn't put together their kid's bike, much less a computer.
Almost all people do not build their own.

Speaking of Apple products there is a Photo Essay of the President engaged in day to day activities. You can see it here:
A Private View of the President

Towards the end are three or four pictures of Bush using his iPod, calling up a song, and riding a bike while listening to it. It would sure be interesting to see his play list.

1.25GHz...

This is supposed to be impressive?

I can get a 3 Ghz PC with more features for under 600.

Oh, and Apple is opposed to free speech online; they are suing bloggers that talk about Apple.

I will not buy their product. They would want to shut FR down.

Instead of comparing this machine to atx machines and laptops, look at the premium prices commanded for small form-factor boxes like the "Mini Book PC" http://www.cappuccinopc.com/
or the mini-itx http://www.mini-itx.com/

Compared to other small, fanless systems the MiniMac is, IMHO, a pretty good bargain.

I was thinking I'd be getting one but, IIRC, 'the cube' wasn't great when it came to ventilation - I can wonder what this thing will be like with the faster processor.

- The lack of even ONE PCI slot is a bit of a handicap.
- Two USB 2.0's? Well...could be better.
- Only ONE firewire? Tsk. Bad.
- The Mac mini's home page says you could plug your guitar into it - does this mean there's audio in? The copy also says that the one visible audio connector is line-out. Which way IS it?
- PC2700 RAM: ouch - I can't add any of my current stuff. And the copy says 'service provider' installation only.
- How big (physical size) is the hard drive? Easily replaceable/swappable if I want to go bigger?
---- If the RAM is a 'service install' the drive probably is too.
- Can't install my second (warehouse) drive - gotta buy a firewire enclosure.
- Ditto with my DVD+-RW 8x (using my current one is cheaper than buying a super drive from Apple).
---- Great - traffic slowdowns on my firewire.
- Gotta hoard those USB ports and 'hub' things strangely if I want to use my video digitizers.
---- Again - traffic concerns.

Maybe I'll wait and see how the unit sells - I almost bought a cube, and look where THAT ended-up... It looks like a good 'crossover' system for someone who has a compromised/microsoft box but I can't see most current Apple users migrating to it easily.
Power users probably won't bite either - it seems like it's only a faster, smaller Cube.

You could've done better Jobs - good price, but handicapped upgradeability. Again.
