Auburn wins Sugar Bowl, joins Utah as co-faux-national champs
ABC TV and the Bogus Championship System | 1/3/05 | French figure skating judge

Auburn beats VA Tech in the Sugar Bowl, 16-13, to finish the season undefeated. 2 days ago Utah whipped Pitt in the Fiesta Bowl to also complete an undefeated season.

USC and Oklahoma play tomorrow night in the bogus national championship game, but in truth, once again no one will know who was the best team this season.

Auburn didn't win, VT lost. A gimme TD passed dropped, and the easiest FG of the season missed.

Utah slaughtered Pitt. Who's Pitt?

No, it's either USC or OK, with OK having the edge, ( I hope that I am very wrong.)

It was a better game than had Cal made it. After Cal's smacking at the hands of Texas Tech....Cal would have been embarassed by Michigan.

I still say...take the top 4 or 8 teams and let them battle to the finish. That is how football was meant to be decided.

Besides, how does a team like Utah build the image and reputation they need to recruit if they're automatically frozen out of the big one, no matter how well they play?

Now that's a little severe. They'll do a heck of a lot better than they would if they were 6-6.

Exactly, Auburn would gladly trade their academic reputation for football success.

Enough sympathy that USC remained number 1 throughout the year despite too many close calls (Cal..not as good as everyone thought and Oregon State...that powerhouse).

Oregon State won seven of their last eight games; the only loss coming to USC. OSU started very slow but finished very strong. Oregon State's domination of Notre Dame four years ago and a repeat on a lesser scale this year will further propel Notre Dame into irrelevance. Anyone who thinks ND is going to get better players after this disaster is crazy. ND should have done the smart thing an declined to go to a bowl game.

Oh, but I forget myself, the MWC is a cupcake league.

The MWC is so awful that a team with a losing record within that conference, Wyoming, beat UCLA! Cal then gets beat by Texas Tech. USC better not lose tomorrow, or the Pac 10 will have to be called the Pac-Man.

NBC will take hostages each year to get ND into a bowl game.

Maine will be enough of a handful for them.

I'm no Auburn fan, and loved the fact that they couldn't play for the mythical nat'l title while on probation. But let's be honest both Alabama and Auburn have a long, long sordid history of being 2 of the dirtiest programs in college football. (Along with Tennessee, which somehow has pretty much gotten a pass...)

"What would make sense would be to have Utah play at USC, Auburn at OK, and have the winners of the 2 games settle the championship at a neutral site."

You are so correct, worth repeating. Unfortunately, it will not happen.

Which conference wins the bowl series competition, based on win percentage, if USC wins tomorrow?

The SEC dirty? They are virgin-pure compared to the old SWC. At one point most of the Conference was on probation, SMU got the death penalty, and the Governor of Texas was caught authorizing payments to college players. When it comes to corruption in college football, everything is truly bigger in Texas.

I've hated nd ever since they negotiated their own deal with NBC. Can't imagine the contract they recently signed is going to pay off for NBC. ND will be lucky to win four games next year. Firing Willingham was stupid.

See post #48, Utah performed similarly to USC and OU against common opponents.

I've been following the coaching career of Auburn's offen-
sive co-ordinator/QB coach, Al Borges. In the mid-1970s I
shared a house in San Luis Obispo with Al's brother-in-law
(to be) and his sister. When I coached HS football in the
early '80s I ran into Al at a coaching clinic in San Fran.
He had had his hotel room broken into the night before and
all his money was looted so I bought him breakfast. Borges
is considered one of the best offensive football minds in
the nation. The guy owes me some tickets, damnmit!

Bama has a long history of National Championships. If you ever lived in the state (perhaps you have), you'd understand the inferiority complex of Auburn fans. Its pitiful to watch.

You can't rest on Bear Bryant's laurels forever. That in itself is getting to be pitiful. This from a fairly neutral observer.

The SWC was as dirty as they get, and the SEC was right there with them. Which SEC school hasn't been on probation at some point, maybe Vandy?
