And people are really going to call them L.A.A.A., right?

Los Angeles Angels makes about as much sense as the La Brea Tar Pits.

Pontiac, a Suburd of Detroit, Lions.

Auborn Hills, just outside of Detroit, Pistons.

Detroit, close to Pontiac and Auborn Hills, but home to the Pistons, Red Wings.

Nahhh, maybe not....

Why was adding the name Los Angeles needed?

I can only think that the nation had no clue where Anaheim was so they added Los Angeles.

I laughed out loud when I heard the morning news guy read this story. Can this town get any more ridiculous?

Reasoning behind the name change

Q. The Angels have been in the news recently with talk of changing their name to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. What are the business decisions behind possibly doing this?

A. I really believe the Angels were put into a box. The Angels were put into a demographic box.

There are 300,000 people in Anaheim. There are three million in Orange County. There are 161/2 million in the metropolitan area.

So when you look at marketing you're saying, "Have we identified ourselves with a particular market?" We spent quite a bit of money doing research on this. We hired a marketing firm, and we went out to all different parts of the metropolitan area to see if they really cared about baseball, trying to get a global view. We were trying to broaden our overall economic reach.

If you look at an NFL team, if they have 60,000 seats, normally they sell out every seat. So really, only those 60,000 people get to go to the games.

But the money is made in broadcasting. And those broadcast dollars go throughout the whole metropolitan area. And that's why the NFL wants to come to Los Angeles. It's the No. 2 media market. From Day One I walked in the door and said, we are in the No. 2 media market, the No. 1 entertainment market when you count Hollywood. So from a marketing perspective, why would I want to market to 300,000 (Anaheim), or three million (Orange County), when I have an opportunity to market 161/2 million in the metropolitan area?

So we are exploring our options.

Q. And you think the Angels being put into "a box" limits revenue streams?

A. We get half of what the Dodgers get in broadcast revenue. Why? Seattle's radio deal is three times ours. Why does Milwaukee have a better radio deal than we do? Why? Why are we 28th or 29th in the country in broadcast revenue?

What a dumb name. Why not include the address of the stadium in the title?

Maybe the City of Anaheim should change its name to "Los Angeles at Anaheim", and then the team would still have the city's name.
