I've noticed a lot of improper use of the Breaking News tab.
There have been a lot of Freepers posting threads celebrating their 3 year, 5 month, 2 day, 7 hour, 19 minute and 27 second anniverseries. YET NONE OF THEM ARE IN BREAKING NEWS!
Listen: The Breaking News tab is for every miscellaneous and random thought you might have, ESPECIALLY announcements of anniverseries. If we don't put these important announcements in one place, where we can find them, how can we have complete knowledge of current events?
PLEASE PEOPLE: USE THE BREAKING NEWS TAB PROPERLY. Post well, and post often.
TOPICS: Cheese, Moose, Sister; Dimensional Doorway; Free Republic Policy/Q&A; Gardening; Test Topic, Ignore It; UFO's
KEYWORDS: beretking; brakeforlazamataz; brayking; breakybreaky; forwhomthelaztrolls; hiphipberet; lazamazot; lazisloose; lazlectureseries; lazpickupline; listentolaz; razthelaz; spelcheque; squeakybrakes

By the way, SC defeated the previously unbeaten PA 70-58. I should have posted it as Breaking News, but I'm having trouble resizing all the pictures....

Thanks. This post looks great in the Breaking News column with "Microchips put into 1,000 unidentified bodies (Thailand)" headline right above it.

I think some people use breaking news to get persistence for their post. I've been tempted myself a few times to make a post "breaking" when it was just something I wanted to be viewable for a while because I knew it would be of interest to a lot of people. I think FR needs a "hot topic" list where posts that receive a lot of comments over some period of time (minutes or hours perhaps) stay there for a spell until interest drops and they finally scroll off. That way "BTTT"s could be used to keep them visible. There'd probably have to be some sort of governor on how many times a particular individual could BTTT something in order to keep it from being abused, but otherwise it seems like something FR could use.
