The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I have a bin that hold three bags too.... Course I go through that in a month. I have a few mice - we actually saw one yesterday.... Gidget is always after them and gets one occasionally.

It kind of goes in spells here. Where I've got alot, then none.

If I keep the empty bags burned, not let them pile up that seems to help too. They really like nesting in a pile of empty bags. But sometimes thats hard when conditions are dry and it's windy.

Can you figure approximate what it costs a week for you to feed one of your average size horses (not pony:) when you have to feed hay and grain?

Using the feed I use it's around $15.00 a week per horse. I've never thought that was too bad.

They've got other places to nest... Gidget hunts a lot in the hay, but I never see actual nests there... they nest in the box of scrap lumber.

Ohhhhhh.

I buy more hay than feed, mostly round bales but right now I have about 90 square bales. I don't usually buy that many square bales but it was good hay at a fair price so I did it. I have an old man that has been supplying my round bales for years.

I don't like mice, nasty little creatures. But I do feel bad when the bags have pile up and I go to moving them and the mice scatter looking for their homes:), the chickens and dogs have a hay day.

It's not more expensive.... by much... and it is tidier, I'll grant you that. Not sure what's keeping me from trying it... except that I am not sure they have enough roughage in the pasture, especially this time of year. I guess maybe they don't need it, they have more grass here than I think yours do! It's just a mental block.

Quick estimate of our costs (the pony doesn't eat a lot less hay, only less grain, so she's not a lot different and it's easier to figure the math as a total.

Our costs at the moment with the current hay supplier:
Per weeK:

+$24.50 ($3.50 per bale x 7 - using a bale a day)
+$10.00 (That's one bag. may not use that much, more like 3 bags/mo
=$34.50
/3 horses.... that's $11.50 per horse.

No foal as yet, her swelling is the same.
I am so looking forward to heading to the mountains in an hour, but hate to leave Sugar! I have left lots of numbers in case of emergency and our relatives have experience.
Why is it you seem to have to pack the sme for 2 nights as you do for a week? It looks like we are moving out! LOL

You know, I have no idea. It will take me awhile to figure that one up. I know I spend alot on shoes for Tuffy. He has that broken back hoof pastern axis and needs corrective shoeing every 5 weeks. All of my other horses are barefoot.

To get decent hay aroud here we pay more then that, unless we get it out of the field and haul ourselves (I hate that). Then of course you have to be able to store it. I could probably store more now with the kids horses not here.

At the feed store they are $7.50 a bale for coastal. I got the big load from a man that sold them to me for $4.00 a bale. Pretty much the same quality as the feed store, too.

Usually when I find cheap hay it's cheap quality but this stuff is pretty good.

Hay prices are all over the board. This supplier is a relatively new source for us. That's the price picking it up out of her barn, a few miles away. She's close, that's good.

This hay is pretty good for local hay, but cheaper than the really good quality 100 pound orchard grass bales from eastern WA that are $10/bale. The bales are lighter and not as dense so you go through it a lot faster... We haven't really tried to figure the difference.
