It's not more expensive.... by much... and it is tidier, I'll grant you that. Not sure what's keeping me from trying it... except that I am not sure they have enough roughage in the pasture, especially this time of year. I guess maybe they don't need it, they have more grass here than I think yours do! It's just a mental block.
Quick estimate of our costs (the pony doesn't eat a lot less hay, only less grain, so she's not a lot different and it's easier to figure the math as a total.
Our costs at the moment with the current hay supplier:
Per weeK:
+$24.50 ($3.50 per bale x 7 - using a bale a day)
+$10.00 (That's one bag. may not use that much, more like 3 bags/mo
=$34.50
/3 horses.... that's $11.50 per horse.
To get decent hay aroud here we pay more then that, unless we get it out of the field and haul ourselves (I hate that). Then of course you have to be able to store it. I could probably store more now with the kids horses not here.

I worked out the same too!
I like to feed hay, where would we be if we didnt go out to the shops and later find that we had hay stuck in our hair? : D
I have occasionally sat down and refigured. The pellets usually don't come far off of hay and grain. The thing I like best is I get the same quality all the time.
Sometimes decent hay is just hard to come by here. I hated it when I'd break open a bale and it what have all that white (I always thought that was old mold that had died??) powdery stuff inside. Looks very unappetizing.
