The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

That's why I do not want another horse using my horse's bits or blanket.

Yeah, we're supposed to get some on Wednesday I think. Not worried about it. It won't be hard to clear... and I don't have to do any shoveling anyway. :-) It's all good.

Morning, glad you got her going without an aid(are apple bars an aid?)..lol The trouble with using a whip, is that they sometimes will drift the rear end away to avoid it. We use the person behind or the whip. Whatever works with the horse, until they learn. Congrats anyhow!

You do need to try and lock your tack up. Sounds like some kids need to be taught some respect for others property.

Yeah that's what my trainer told me but she was popping her with the lead rope and she didn't move over. She told me if she did I could reach over with with my crop. I do give horse treats at times but I try never to do it at any certain point so she doesn't come to expect it. The look on her face was priceless when she noticed the barrel was gone though.

Pretty short ride... mostly from boredom!

At least you got out, enjoyed the sunshine and your horses.
Ditto on the arena riding.
Have you guys checked into leasing a trailer?

Do you/your horses get jittery riding that close to the hot wire? Do you turn it off while riding, in case they accidentlly touch it?

I think about it, but the horses seem fine where we were for those pics. We are often following paths that are their own paths through the woods they've been on many times before. There is one spot I am careful to keep my feet tucked in, and warned ecrubh to tuck his feet in, because it is narrow between the fence and a tree. You can see the tree behind me here, and the worn path.

I don't turn it off, they know the fence is there, and wouldn't get any closer to it than their comfort zone if I asked them to. I am more concerned in that spot of getting my foot hooked in the field fence that is on the bottom half, than I am the electric. The only wire that is actually hot there is the top white one. They aren't ~all~ hot. I know that, but they don't.

I worry about falling into one of the T-posts if Bay tripped or something.

Great pictures! Are you using a tiny camera to carry around and take pics? The only camera I have is huge and I couldn't carry it with me. Maybe I need to get my husband to buy me a little one for our anniversary, which is Feb 5th.

Ours is pretty small and easy to carry. Nikon Coolpix 775

We need the truck too. ;~D Mine is just a small pickup. It's our next purchase.

We all have things we fear, I guess, that depends on our experiences.

My farrier was suppose to be here 15 minutes ago:(. I should be able to get 2 rode today. I got mixed up about the vet appointment. It is tomorrow. So I have all day here, and it's suppose to top out at 70:)

Then decided that all that grass along the road needed to be burned. I love fire:)

If you lived here you'd be in jail now. Of course you'd have to scrape about 3' of snow to get to the grass. :-)

Been outside piddling around, and took some pictures:)

Did you piddle the fire out?

Exciting news about taking the colt... I hope he loads and rides easy and settles in at your place. Look forward to pics and updates!

Thanks - We are all excited....they are bringing him tomorow before lunch. Today we are having more round bales delivered .... lots to do to get ready for his arrival. They are going to do what you (someone) suggested - bringing his mom along on the trailer to keep him calm....

We don't have a lot of fencing options - Mostly just one big pasture with a corral and walk in barn. So we plan to put our other 3 in the corral while the baby gets settled.... then take the App. out (he is bottom of pecking order) and let them get acquainted, etc.... nice and slow. Any other recommendations on making the transition easier

I haven't seen how all this lays out, but I would likely reverse it. Put the new guy in the strong (?)corral at least until mom is long out of earshot, and for the first two to three days. What kind of fence is it, and can the horses nose up to each other safely over it without getting caught in wire? Crowding the others in there might make them worse during the excitement of the arrival. The new guy doesn't need the open space.

Good morning, Home from work this morning. After spending 45 minutes on the road and getting about 6miles, I got a call from a friend further down the road than I was - road finally closed another 10miles down due to accidents. I was hung up in one that involved three cars, jaws of life being used on one, further down, 17car pile up and care flight on the way. Another friend, caught in the middle, finally turned around and headed home after two hours - and is currently trying to get past an accident between where she is and home.

Have I mentioned I hate winter :(
