The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

MA declared a state of emergency from yesterday into today.

I thought about you, when I heard that. We were lucky, it moved North towards the Cleveland area. I'm glad to hear you are ok, and have power.

I don't think I've ever been more scared in my entire life. The fire department was here in minutes but when you are watching an out of control fire, it seems like hours!

LOL you're right, I don't think I'll put that to the test! Watching a fire that you yourself started heading straight for your neighbors house is a nauseating feeling.

Great old photo! I love that. It's great that we can scan and share all those old photos now, photos that were one of a kind and hard to reproduce before. I really want to scan a lot more of the old family photos, send them out on CD... It makes them less vulnerable to being lost forever if something happens.

We just got back from our little ride here.... post ing pics in a minute.

Just got back from checking on the horses. I know some of yall will groan at my technique but Sarah Lee will trot with leading now. I took her to a barrel and put 3 apple bars there. We walked to the end and I trotted her back. She couldn't figure out why I couldn't move faster. After 3 times we started again and after a few steps she slowed and looked like 'where the hell did it go" but started again for me. (hehe. It was moved when she wasn't looking) She responds a lot better to "trot" than clicks though .

They were incredibly nice about the whole thing, even asking the firemen to let it burn a little further and get a big sticker patch. That next summer was the greenest their pasture had ever been, at least.

Heh... That's Becky... let it burn... I was gonna have to mow all that anyhow...

Heh... I won't say a word about it Cindy ;~D

Ecurbh had a frustrating time lunging today before the ride... it's tough, because neither he nor Cyn are pros at it... she kept turning and facing him, like deaconjim said his mare does.... and you really have to aggressively push her out to get her going, and drive pretty hard to keep her going. She'd go for me, but I push hard and talk loud at her. Ecurbh is very soft spoken, and a little too subtle with his hands and whip. But here she's going good.

I just wanted to see her lunged good before we rode, because she hasn't been ridden since late October, and we don't know her well enough yet to know if she behaves after too much time off. ecurbh got tired of trying to lunge her and said 'lets just ride'.

Bay and the pony nap tied to the fence while we work on it.

We be having an early spring around here. Grass is starting to grow, and the daffodils are coming up.

Here we are just riding around our back forty... It's pretty boring to ride circles around the same trail... we need to get out.

The pony was decidedly 'in the way' today. She always follows us around, but she is in heat today, and was acting squirrelly... She would get right in front of either me or ecurbh, and stop and give us her butt. I wished I had something to slap it with!

Pony... "MOVE IT!"

This is the area we brush-hawgged last year, will hopefully get good grass on it this year. The seed took hold anyhow. The main pasture is in the sun out behind there.

Okie smokin today. His teenage friend on him when we got there and didn't offer to get off:') The kid riding him galloping. He was also working on his leads. He doesn't like the right but he was doing it. He and another boy had barrels set up but it got dark on them . I think he wants to show him. He was hinting. We'll see. I wish I had had my camera with me. Ok-man was gorgeous and showing his stuff and what he could do. He drew him an audience for sure.

Eddie just couldn't stand it. He wanted me to briddle Sarah Lee and was going to ride her bareback. I don't think so. We ride tomorrow. I hope he stays on because I know he already planning:')

Pretty short ride... mostly from boredom! I really can't believe I used to ride exclusively in arenas. I just can't stand it now! I want to go somewhere. I just walked ole Bay today, he's been off all winter too. But he seemed to feel great.
