The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Hair when you build you stable find a way to fireproof and put those lockers in. I'm going to move everything but our saddles and briddles to a box on the back of Eddie's truck. The owner trys to talk to them and helps me find my stuff but the kids keep "borrowing" I wouldn't mind if they would put stuff back but they don't and I can not afford to keep us all in supplies.

Can you get a locking trunk to leave there? or is the truck easier than that?

We talked about that. There really insn't much space in the tack room. We are going to put the stuff in the truck tomorrow and then look at it. He has to clean it out tonight first. I brought my new bottle of fly spray that I had to buy home with me. It took about 15 minutes tonight for the owner and I to find my halter and lead rope. They were both in different places. As I mentioned, if it isn't supplies I don't care if someone borrows something (except my briddle and blanket) if they would just put stuff back.

It's rude to borrow other people's stuff. That's why I liked that barn design where people had their own tack closet. I still like the idea.

Morning, all!

Not only is it rude to borrow other people's stuff, it can spread disease. In my opinion, no one in a public boarding facility should use someone else's stuff, especially without asking.

Great pictures! Are you using a tiny camera to carry around and take pics? The only camera I have is huge and I couldn't carry it with me. Maybe I need to get my husband to buy me a little one for our anniversary, which is Feb 5th.

Thanks for thinking of me. I'm fine, and actually we didn't lose power. The only thing that we have lost is the ground. The snow is up to the first floor windows in some places.

When I heard that Mass. was socked in, I was racking my brain about which saddle club member lived up there. I'm glad to hear that you're ok. Here in North Texas we don't get much snow but if we do get a little, a half inch will shut the whole town down. Aren't we wimps?

Hahahaha. That's funny! :-) I have to walk to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription today, down a busy main road, and it's going to be hairy because none of the sidewalks are shoveled, and the drifts are taller than I am.

I bet I'm not the only one who would love to see some pics.

Be careful on your walk, it sounds really dangerous.

We have our own weather problems. The record high here is 115 or so and that was a year that we had over 100 degree temps every day for 3 months straight and most of those were in the 110 range. Old people were dropping like flies that year. It was 1980 if anyone would like to look it up. It's interesting reading.

I was looking at your pictures again.

Do you/your horses get jittery riding that close to the hot wire? Do you turn it off while riding, in case they accidentlly touch it?

I've always disliked getting close to hot wire. I had a horse jump out from under me one time. The only thing I could figure was he suddenly noticed we were close to hot wire. He/I didn't touch it, I think he "just" saw it. That was one of the times I got hurt, all four fingers on one hand got bent back clear to my wrist, it felt like. Didn't break it, but the palm and back of my hand turned black. Really hurt.

If we're going to get snow here, I always want it to snow alot, maybe not as much as you have:), but more then we usually get. The few times we've gotten alot it was fun. Of course after a day or so, especially having livestock it gets old. I guess the most we have ever gotten at one time here is 10 inches, and that's only been a handful of times my whole life.

I don't need to look it up:) I remember that summer very clearly. I was pregnant with my daughter. It was a horrible summer.

Oh we usually get 2 feet once and a while, and a foot or more isn't uncommon, but we haven't gotten a real honest to goodness blizzard in a long time. From pics, you really can't tell how much snow we've gotten, but it's past my waste in some places, and I'm about 5' tall. Snow is fun, but I'm not looking forward to trying to get to the pharmacy today....

Ouch. Being pregnant that year would have been unbearable. I can't even imagine it. I've gone through mild summers pregnant and thought I was gonna die.

10 inches of snow is unheard of here. I think we've gotten 3 inches before but I'm like you, one or 2 days of it is plenty.

Eeek. That's hot. Sometimes we get heat waves like that, but usually about 100 or so, or the high 90s, and rarely for more than 3 days or so. Yikes, that's hot.

Well, with pregnacy you really don't have a choice but to bear it:)

The gods really conspired against me that year. We were building our house, and I mean "we" built it. We moved in in Aug. with just a small window unit. I worked full time till a month before she was born, and I have very difficult pregnancies, sick the whole time.

I clearly remember the day we finally got a break. The break in the heat came late one evening, after a grueling day, and I really felt bad. Then the temps just suddenly dropped to the low 90's and we got about 10 minutes of rain. In that 10 minutes, I felt like a new person. I hadn't realized how much the weather was affecting how I felt.
