The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

It looks like "aw mom, put the camera away!" Maybe some of that but I think he was telling her something she was doing "wrong" - KWIM...

Yeah I do that with lunging. I try to set my tone (walk, trot, lope) to the rythmn.

Lately I lead her without the rope. Not today. She just wanted to eat grass and at a slow pace she could try to grab a bite. I have no trouble getting her to trop on the lunge line. I have to get behind her butt to get her to lope sometimes though. The circle interesting. I'll try that. I really don't want my husband helping. I love him dearly but....:')

Thanks Becky - I feel very blessed - I really wanted my kids to learn everything they could about caring for their horses - not just how to throw on a saddle and ride. My friend has taught them how to worm them and figure out why they do certain things. I think it makes them better owners and they enjoy it, too.

My friend's 80+ year old MIL is having knee replacement surgery so she can ride her horse ("Cowboy") again. She is an amazing woman - she hauled horses from Ga. to S. Fla (12 hours) alone - when she was in her late 70's!

Hi, Sounds great! I think if anything my daughter is teaching me! I wish I had had the opportunity at her age to learn to ride, etc. There is so much more to learn than can be taught at school. That is one reason why we have so many animals. Feeding etc is something the children enjoy together.

OK. Question from a novice such as I. I would Love to ride Sugar bareback, and wonder whether it would help me and her communicate better? Whether I would be able to learn the little movements that horses sense easier?

Maybe, but the only sane answer is no... I was a kid. It is really not very secure, it's slippery and hard to hang on. Yes, you will feel every movement and wonder how you'll ever stay on ;~D. I wouldn't advise it as a way to learn for adults... Unfortunately, unless you are a gymnast, kids get away with a natural athleticism and have reflexes we don't have. I still ride bareback on occasion and am amazed now at how hard it is to stay on. I am not sweating in this pic, though it was really hot this day. I had just hosed my head off with a hose, and I thought it was too hot to put a saddle on for a ride in the shade.

That said, the first time ecurbh rode was sortof bareback, we climbed on and went for a ride in the snow with just Bay's blanket on, not too long after he got here. Even with the blanket on, it's a LOT more substance to hang on to, and a little less slippery than bareback.

I don't know why we don't have pics of him riding... he rode the same day we took these of me riding.

I think he found that easy enough to stay on, at the walk at least ;~D 'course, I didn't just slap the horse and send him off on his first time up ;~D

Lucky him................dont know why we are still married sometimes! LOL
What you are saying makes a lot of sense, its just that I would like to try it. What about the bareback pads? I am pretty supple, have had many years of martial arts and walked 8 miles a day and did a lot of cycling.

I found the pics of ecurbh up ~bareback~, I was looking in the wrong place, because I was remembering it wrong. It wasn't in the snow when he got up the first time. Here he is, with just my english saddle pad under the butt for a little padding. This was his first ride, I was sure we saved the moment in pictures, we save everything in pictures!

If you want to try it with a bareback pad, try it, at least walking. Maybe your husband will handle the lead line for you until you can feel balanced. The nice thing about bareback is it's easy to learn how to hug the neck and slide off in an 'emergency' if you want. Just know that you can't hang on to the pad, and never use a bareback pad with stirrups The cinches are not adequate. Grab a handful of mane if you are going to hang on, not the pad.

Looks like the discussion is dying off sufficiently to change the subject again.

RoS and I have decided that, instead of building a new barn for the stables, we're going to strip our old barn back to the steel frame and convert it. The existing structure is 24' x 36', laid out in 6 12' x 12' sections, with 12' ceiling. The long side of the barn faces our house. Anyone have any advice on the design?
