Word For The Day, Wednesday, November 24, 2004

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....

gimcrack \JIM-krak\, noun, adjective:
gimcrackery; noun

1. A trivial mechanism; a device; a toy; a pretty but useless or worthless object; a gewgaw.
2. Tastelessly showy; cheap; gaudy.

The pages in the campaign paper trail released thus far give details on what the Democrats' new category of $250,000 super-donors were explicitly promised for their largess, right down to the "exclusive lapel pin" -- a gimcrack Croix de Guerre from the Democratic National Committee.
--Francis X. Clines, "Donor Is Listed as 'Buddhist Temple' in Democratic Documents," New York Times, December 28, 1996.

Etymology: The origin of gimcrack is uncertain. It is perhaps an alteration of Middle English gibecrake, a slight or flimsy ornament.

Let's all be careful out there this winter with the snow and ice. I ended up in a ditch alongside a rural road on my way back home today. I was only going 30 MPH(in a 55 zone), but it didn't matter. I hit the brake at the wrong time and spun out.

Luckily the worst I did was tweak my ankle a bit stepping on rough terrain. The truck's damaged but drivable and it'll be pulled out tomorrow (I'm staying at my dad's house tonight) on my way to Thanksgiving.

After growing up on a dirt road, diving the same type of truck for 5 years, and going on several hunting trips in bad weather, I thought I was used to this and a damn good driver in bad weather. Wasn't today. This will be an expensive lesson on brakes and overcorrecting turns. :(

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Alright, alright-don't get your shorts in a wad-the giblets for gravy have been cooking since 5:30, the bread is rising, dressing is mixed and ready to cook, I made the cranberry sauce and an apple pie last night, and as soon as I've got enough daylight to see by I'm lighting the fire in the smoker for the turkey leaving only salad to make while all the other stuff cooks. I mopped all the floors downstairs yesterday and dusted, and I just finished swiffering the upstairs hall and loft-fast enough for ya?

And as soon as I light the smoker and get warm again (it is 35 here), I'm going to take a well-deserved break and read a favorite book and watch the fog drift over the water for awhile.

Fourteen years ago, in Jacksonville, we had an inch of snow. The city shut down (no salt trucks). No one owned snow tires, knew how to drive on snow or even knew how to get ice off of our cars. Many brave souls tried walking on the icy sidewalks.

I don't know how the human race survives in snowy weather, but you have all my admiration for going this long without driving into a ditch.

Argh, it looks as though this thread is populated by sloths and slug abeds, (as I type in my nightgown.)

Happy Thanksgiving!

LE, blue doesn't bother me, if I've seen blue food coloring go in the other end. Lillie's output has increased, poor thing, because she is on anti-biotics for her ear infection. And her mommy has been spoiling (tempting) her with her favorite food, peaches.

Slip, my baby sister is an RN. She's a warm, loving, funny, feminine person. She just doesn't want kids. Some people are that way.

My dad, (a USAF bomber pilot)wanted to teach all of his kids to fly. We can all take off and land a plane...but none of us love it the way he did, none of us owns a plane or ever went to get our pilot license. (And planes are alot less maintenance than kids...)

You are a great woman, Tex! Unlike some of these other croquettes who are obviously still in bed hoping the Turkey Fairy will show up and take care of everything. Have a great day!

Driving in snow takes some instruction and practice, but most of us are of course quite accustomed to it. It's good to see you and Tex putting these other croquettes to shame. Have fun!

Found this on another thread...also a power point presentation on what was found in Fallujah, the arrest of five Arab fighters in Basra who must have spent the night in a Victoria's Secret showroom because they were singing like canaries this morning, but nothing on W's whereabouts yet today. Do you think there'll be a twofer?

Dutchgirl - I grew up in Texas and we usually had a couple of snowfalls each winter - no trucks to clear the roads because the snow usually will melt within a few days - you just can't drive on it - the cars pack it down into ice then you are really in trouble.

In Pennsylvania the plows clear the roads and throw salt behind them as they go - the roads are so clear it is like driving in the summer! The snow can be a pain but it really is pretty and kind of fun - *unless you have to shovel it by hand*

Thank you FRiend!!!!

I know you all celebrated your Thanksgiving last month, so Happy (belated) Thanksgiving to you.

My bird goes in the oven in 30 minutes, hubby just called from the store checking if I needed anything other than the apples I needed to replace for my pie.......between my daughter and the dog, I don't have enough!!!
Of course I also reminded him to get a bag of ice, because there will be no room in the fridge for beer - so it muct go in the cooler (priorities, my FRiend, priorities!)
