KERRY: "We intercepted a suitcase ... with nuclear materials in it" (???)
vanity | Sept. 30, 2001 | self

During the debate, Kerry said: "There are some 600-plus tons of unsecured material still in the former Soviet Union and Russia. At the rate that the president is currently securing that, it will take 13 years to get it.
"I did a lot of work on this. I wrote a book about it several years ago, maybe six or seven years ago, called, 'The New War,' which saw the difficulties of this international criminal network. And back then, we intercepted a suitcase in a Middle Eastern country with nuclear materials in it, and the black market sale price was about $250 million. Now, there are terrorists trying to get their hands on that stuff today."

Is this a real "suitcase nuke" incident? Anybody ever heard of this?

Three former Soviet citizens were arrested in Munich carrying a lead lined suitcase containing 363 grams of the 4,000 grams of nuclear material needed to make a crude bomb. The material was being offered at $350 million.

Hmmm, either he has confused Munich with the Middle East, or nuclear material is substantially cheaper in the Middle East?

On amazon.com's search in the text feature from page 116:

"Three former Soviet citizens were arrested in Munich carrying a lead-lined suitcase containing 363 grams of the 4,000 grams of nuclear material needed to make a crude bomb. The material was being offered at $350 million."

Of note, this is the only reference to "suitcase" in the book.

Not quite a bomb. Not quite a middle eastern country. He can't even quote his own book correctly. Who wrote that thing?

Bill Burkett? Michael Moore? Zach Exley?

You all need to read some of Bill Gertz' books -- in Betrayal he talks about a lot of this. I loaned the book or could give you all the exact data... all I can say is if Kerry were to (God forbid) be elected, we would see a continuation of the Clinton/Russia Nuclear stuff where we paid them to get rid of their nuc's and all they did was proliferate more while Clinton was dismanteling all of our protections -- and, yes, Gertz talked about how many missing suitcases there was/is.

My take on the debate is changing rapidly.
At first, I was a bit disappointed in the President's delivery, although I liked his message and consistency on hitting his points.

Now, I believe the strategy was to not make any mistakes and let Kerry run at the mouth so he can be picked apart on his "facts" by the PJ squad (glad to be a card carrying member!) and others.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Why not? Assault weapons are way cheaper over there, too.

Someone more knowledgeable about suitcase nukes, please correct me if necessary.... but doesn't the phrase "suitcase nukes" refer to their approximate size -- and NOT that they're kept in actual suitcases? Thanks.

Actually, everbody knows that Kerry voted to aprehend the $350 million before he voted against it.

side note: everybody knows Germany is part of the Middle East. It's between Western and Eastern Europe, isn't it? Doch! Das stimmt meine Freunde! ;)

I agree. At first, I thought Kerry had a clear win. But the more I think about what actually came out of his mouth, I cannot see anyone in their right mind voting for this loon. Global testing, nukematerial to Iran, kicking regional players out of talks with NKorea, isolating Putin/Russia, UNILATERAL NUCLEAR DISARMAMENT.

What a F'in idiot.

Yeah, this looks like a case for the pajamahedeen! Nobody else seems to have noticed. I watched Hannity, and he didn't say anything about this Kerry claim. Everybody's just paying attention to who "looked presidential," blahblahblah.

So if this proves to be an "Christmas in Cambodia" kind of thing, the blogosphere will have to do the heavy lifting.

I am someone who does look at the little things in debates such as the watch glance by Bush41, the Gore sighs. Bush had his angry/perturbed/frustrated reaction shots. But Kerry had his doofus head bob and smile shots.

But, Kerry had the most inane words come out of his mouth. He is a total nincompoop. How can he think that what he said tonight won't bite him in his arse in the next few days/weeks. Looking presidential isn't being presidential.

Look for Cheney to play up his gaffes next Tuesday.
