Whats the best all time movie music?
Vanity | September 17th2004 | Vanity

What's the best movie music of all time? John Williams and Star Warsor all the hits from Chicagohow about Joplin's rags from The Sting or the opening scene from 2001? I know I like the renditions of the Navy Hymn from The Perfect Storm you have to be hard hearted not to get a lump in your throat during that scene, and the rendition in The Crimson Tide. So Drama, musicals, Comedies, chick flicks, westerns, SciFi, etc. which movie has the best music? What's your vote?

"Jerusalem",I think, is a rather old hymn, used in countless movies. It's almost the British "America".

Ennio Morricone is a good bet any day.

Another good one is The Mission though I like the scores for Fist Full of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, too.

"My Fair Lady"'s soundtrack, bar none. Lerner and Loewe could write rings around Rodgers & Hammerstein.

Gladiator and Blackhawk Down (same composer IIRC)

Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs

Star Wars (it's cliche now but perhaps the most recognizable score in history)

Jaws (I know... two Williams' movies but this is before he became so repetitive).

Mancini (all) has been mentioned, I think to include Days of Wine and Roses.

Was the score to Charade a Mancini creation? I still can't get that stupid theme out of my head!

It's a great score. It is very logical as well. F minor for this type of action A Major for that and so on.
The more heroic passages come off as heroic but not pompus.

Not that it matters but I am currently working on a score for an Independant film. It is my third film to work on but my first to do the majority of the score.

Best "adapted" soundtrack: American Graffiti. The constant open air soundtrack of the classic tunes works so well.

Best "original" soundtrack: Bernard Herrmann, PSYCHO. This movie grabs you at the opening theme and carries the movie so well. Can you imagine the shower scene without the music? I can't.

Honorable mention: W.A. Mozart for Amadeus (Sir Neville Marriner conducting).

I haven't read the entire thread, so I don't know if anyone has suggested:

Also Sprach Zarathustra, Richard Strauss, from "2001, A Spacy Odyssey."

"Gone With the Wind" (esp. "Tara's Theme")

"Raiders of the Lost Ark" (soundtrack by John Williams)

"Gettysburg" (soundtrack by Randy Edelman

Of modern film composers, John Williams is far and away the most prolific. The main theme from "Gettysburg" is certainly as stirring as anything you'll find.

The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly is in many ways Ennio Morricone's finest hour. Just awesome - my favorite film soundtrack (I just popped the CD in and am always psyched for the end of the album - 'The Ecstasy of Gold,' and 'The Trio.'
