Solar system may be one of a kind

Our solar system may be unique after all, despite the discovery of at least 120 other systems with planets, astronomers said on Wednesday.

All the other solar systems that have been found have big, gassy planets circling too close to their stars to allow them to be anything like Earth or its fellow planets, the British and U.S.-based researchers said.

If that is the case, Earth-like planets will be very rare, the astronomers write in the latest issue of the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

"Maybe these other extrasolar systems ... contain only the giant planets," said Mario Livio of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore.

Livio and colleagues took a close look at what is known about the other planetary systems that have been discovered.

Io would make an excellent ranch for me. 1/5 the surface area is pretty awesome. I love the solar system. I wish I was 10, I'd have a chance to have a real ranch. Thanks for the formulas. You are a gentleman and a scholar.

I am sitting in my office and I see nobody. I must be alone in the world.

It has been pointed out to me that you troll threads in order to draw attention to your pathetic website. Your website would be more successful if you spent some time trying to understand what other people actually find interesting, instead of fixating on yourself and how much smarter than everyone else you think you are.

Cite your source. I aware of no math that's proven the finite hypothesis.

I think you are thinking in terms of area. That's not what I'm talking about. Let me put it this way: Do you think the universe has been around for an infinite amount of time and will be around for an infinite amount of time? Do you think the universe contains an infinite amount of matter and energy? If not, then the universe is not "infinite" in the ways that matter most. It's not the space that creates solar systems or life but the matter and energy that occupies it, concentrating and combining over time. I'm not aware of anyone who is claiming that the universe contains an infinite amount of matter and/or energy and the jury seems to be out on whether the universe will end or not.

Ahhh... Presidio... I try and make amends with you and you do this. Poor Presidio. As a matter of fact I've hardly started to 'draw attention' to my 'pathetic website', something I've paid little 'attention' to myself. I also wonder if you ever care to make 'valid points'. Exactly where do you find me 'fixating on (myself) and how much smarter than everyone else (I think I am)'? Is that more a feeling brought about by your own insecurities? And why would the purpose of my website be to talk about what 'other people actually find interesting'? After all it is 'my website', wouldn't it make sense that I'd care to talk about what 'interests me'?

LOL! What do you call the inspiration for your childish posting?

the discovery of at least 120 other systems with planets

The number jumped to 230 a couple weeks ago with the addition of a sky survey.

Hmm. I 'rescinded the grounds of my 'childish' posting after you whined about how 'popular it was'. Ever since I did that, you make more random assumptions about me and how I think. And, yes, you with your "LOL" is very classic. I'm ROTFLMAO at how pwn3d you'd be if you ever met my 133t self. And, had you read my other post, the 'inspiration' for my posting was to be random and I 'apologize' if that doesn't satisfy you. It has become more and more obvious to me that your posts are filled with uninteresting nonsense that just fill up these message boards. I'm still trying to find one thing you've posted that is remotely interesting or 'funny'.

That's the way it works kid. You try to dis me and you end up making a total ass out of yourself. And every time you try to get the last word in, I get to remind you of that fact.

Wow. You're truly a master of rhetoric there. Gotta love the way you ignore most of what I say to make your points. Yeah, and you totally humiliated me. I mean, gosh, I'm still trying to recover from this... You should be nicer Einstein errrr...Presidio, it's not fair trying to argue with someone of your superior intellect...
And getting the last word in? You're the one who is replying with the lame retort. I basically said, "Fine, you're post isn't lame to EVERYONE, just most people and most importantly me... oh well". And you can't seem to let it end at that. Get a life.

I'm not "ignoring what you say." I am reading the first line, deciding that you are irrelevant, and choosing to focus on your decision to pedantically declare that no one was interested in a thread that has now gotten roughly 2,000 hits.

Kind of makes you wonder how this kid goes about making friends. Wahat a great way to advertize your web site: go to a chat room and make brainless insults. Yup, that'll bring the visitors.

And while you are at it, be sure to violate the chat room's policy against self-promotion.

Hmm... Time for a case study. I'm going to find an equally lame article and see if I can beat out that 2k hit total. Shouldn't be hard... I'll be sure to link you.

Sure...and then..our current ability to assay Light spectrum and radiation idents...and say.."Yup..thats whats there"

not that they are wrong..the return info is amazing..and science deserves High Fives for its endeavors.

yet still...*Sandbox city.

Ants are amazing for their specialized capabilities.
Yet..an ant on a tree limb near a super Hiway.

Ant can detect motion..vibration..even discern visually to a limited extent.

Ant does not have a clue whats going on with those Blurrs rocketing by so fast.

We are still very much like that Ant..in figuring out what is going on out there : )

Are there *Carl Sagan Ants?

Would that ant run away to a pre-arranged interview..to avoid an Immanuel Velikovsky ant in a Public Ant debate?

I hear the Ant is going to the moon soon.

Could be a Chinese ant....won't that be intersting. : )

why spend billions of dollars trying to find life on other planets?

When this comes up, I step back from the question itself and look at NASA's budget and mission. Should they be searching for extraterrestrial life at all?

Probably they should, but it shouldn't be their main reason for exploring Mars.

The question of going beyond exploring to the idea of colonizing is also something NASA needn't be involved in. The private sector will do that at their own expense as soon as property rights are established.
