The Hobbit Hole XIII - Let them pass! Let them pass!
See our freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net home page! ^

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Let them pass! Let them pass!
(Note to dwarves, this is only meant figuratively)

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Sheesh, that was a funkle-spam. Not the most common combination. But six posts loses a few points for artistry, if it had been five posts, you'd have had a real winner.

Dinnertime! Yay!

Next time I'll try a limmerick or two or maybe haiku. Enjoy dinner!

This site has an article of a man who built his basement using ICFs.
http://www.taunton.com/finehomebuilding/pages/h00031.asp

This site has information regarding another option dependign on the building code and what you want to do. Straw Bale construction.

http://www.eere.energy.gov/EE/strawhouse/house-of-straw.html

I don't really have a clue what PE might advise, but I can say that we have talked about eventually buying some land and using strawbale construction to make a sorta hobbithole of our own.

Kindred spirit!! My dream in life is to (get rich enough to) build a completely off-the-grid place in WY. Big'ol is slowly coming around to the idea of being a hermit. But my fantasy house is partially earth-sheltered with the balance being some kind of 'alternative' material: straw bales, tires, something. Then, (if I get really rich) I'll build a winter home in AZ of rammed earth.

I had to teach a year of environmental science and made a lesson out of alternative building materials, passive solar, etc. That's what started the rumors on campus that I was totally nuts.... came in handy when I later had to teach them chemistry.

He can always put his own stuff back... hopefully he'd be motivated to do it.

Oh yeah. That's the plan anyway, cause he'll want to decide what goes up and what doesn't.

Best thing is that all of his stuff is now in his closet, and the closet isn't full. We got rid of a lot of crap.

Each home job comes with a certain number of cuss words in the budget for fixin'.

Heh...when I built Jr's fort (for his 6th birthday) I built most of it while he and the Mrs. were away visiting relatives. When the Mrs. called I told her I'd have made a lot more progress if'n I hadn't hadta spend so much time at the library.

"Library?" she asked.

Yep, I says. I used up all the swear words I knew and had to go learn some more...

Even though most of it is new to me, I'm willing to try to tackle some smaller projects. Like I said, I fixed one...once. But after last year's disasterous leak, I told the Mrs. this mornin that there's no higher priority.

Yeah, pretty much, ditto. Changing the subject of the thread is like turning the Titanic; takes time, effort, and might just make matters worse.

Gonna spend the next hour or so with family, then getting caught up on whatever and ready for Monday. Sigh, weekends are too short.

Sigh, weekends are too short.

I'm gonna have to stay home tomorrow to finish Jr's room. I'm just about done with the first coat on the trim. But covering red with metallic silver ain't an easy job.

They sit for months until some newbie decides to ping me and say he agrees wholeheartedly.

Or that he knows the person involved in the news story personally and I couldn't be more wrong ;~D

Today was camping gear inventory day; my cousin and I are going for a week to a corner of Ontario, and have decided to take two smallish tents (rather than have one of us buy a larger one) and assorted other gear that will make "roughing it" a tad less rough.

Unlike our trip to Gettysburg last year, this trip will not include DVDs played on the laptop. Or electricity, other than batteries, and those only for lighting.

On review, honesty requires me to reveal that I have a bug zapper that runs on D cells, and my cousin is bringing GRMS radios. But other than that, all electricity is confined to flashlights. And cameras. And to start the car.

Geesh, we're spoiled.
