Thank you all for coming! And for everyone watching and participating from home via that camera, we hope you can enjoy the day ~almost~ as much as being there!
So....is there really science in "Earth Science" or is it all envirocrap?
Just wondering.
*snif* I miss WeddingMoot.
Thanks for getting these pics posted so quickly, 2J!
When I was going to school, at least, Earth Science was a general course combining Geology, Meteorology, Biology, etc.
Sorry Corin. I failed Washington State History in high school, which was a particular bummer because mom was friends with the teacher. I pulled some other frap too, but in the end, I turned out OK.
I am really glad we went to that place and you could have some local seafood. It was a little spendy, but at least you got a good sample!
I failed a class, once, at community college - it seriesly wasn't my fault. Mostly. It was partly online and the professor didn't bother to actually get the assignments to the ones of us who took it just online... a 1-credit waste of time class. I should have protested but I was 16 and stupid.
Fortunately it didn't prevent me from getting into grad school!
Oh I believe any class you failed wasn't your fault. I was goofing off, and hated the class. History is a weak point for me. I like historical context and historical ideas, but I am lousy with names and dates, which makes me particularly weak on history tests ;~D
I'm glad too...and I'm glad everyone else's hobbit-sense kicked in and they ate too! I woulda felt foolish shoveling it in while everyone else sipped on drinks and watched me.
I woulda done it, but I woulda felt foolish. LOL
Still, that fish and chips was what I think about the most...that was truly scrumptious... I only stopped eating because my poor stomach couldn't accpet another bite!
I had some bad classes! Got a couple Bs that should have been As, if I'd really studied. One of my two Cs could have been a B... but I learned a lesson about goofing off. And about how to study.
History was never an issue for me. I just read a lot in high school, then when I got to college everything was watered-down pap. But dates were hard. And trying to keep Louis XIV and Louis XVII straight... no, thanks.
The Tides does have the best fish and chips!
Well, yes and no. He squeaked by on the standardized test. But the frustrating thing is, if he actually hears the lesson and (sometimes even) reads it, he will retain that information.
The failing grades are because he neither does nor turns in homework.
If he did, he'd likely make the honor roll.
I might know that if'n he'd ever brought a book home...
In my case, I've always been good at tests...I could study the night before and do OK...
But nothing sticks! In some ways that's kinda fun...I can reread a book or watch a movie again just a short time afterwards, and it's all new. ;-) But I really wish I didn't have such a lousy memory. No matter how carefully I read something and go over and over it, I forget most of it in a short time.
Do what you have to do, Corin. You're a terrific parent, so I'm sure whatever decision you make will be the right one.
There are students here that do that, too. My boss was complaining because he has students that show up for EVERY class and are attentive, ace the tests...but still fail because they don't do any of the homework assignments. That's just sad.
Oh, I know he'll turn out okay. I had my own failures in high school and a couple in college.
BUT, the issue here is that he has a dream of playing football for Virginia Tech. There are two realities here:
1) He is not good enough as a football player (especially a lineman) to get recognized for a scholarship, or to even be recruited. If he got admitted to Virginia Tech there is a strong possiblity he could walk on. Linemen have some success at doing that, however...
2) To get into Virginia Tech, he has to have a 3.5 GPA. There's no way around that.
This is HIS dream. His mom and I would prefer he go to our alma matter. Still, we'd like to help make this happen for him, or at least give him a competitive shot.
Something is not connecting to make him see that he has to work for this.
Yeesh! I can tell I'd been drinkin'!
I saw that happen. Never understood it, but in a number of classes the percentage of grade dependant on homework was reduced to low enough that if you aced all the tests, you'd probably squeak by. But why - I'm talking about at a college level. I've seen enough high school students with boring or stupid homework to understand why they don't want to bother.
