It's a little more complicated than that, but suffice it to say that the "traditional" view (for the past 75 years or so) that the Arab world was the center of culture and science while Europe remained mired in the middle ages can be quite misleading. Indeed, some of the Greek corpus was preserved and made available to the West via Arabic translations of Greek work (which were then translated into latin), but much more was destroyed by the Arabs. The work in the sciences and the like was primarily done by the cultured subject peoples ruled by Islam and claimed by them. The very civilization of the Mediterranean world, and lack of military interest or strength made it easy picking for Islam.

What a boon for socialists: to demonize Muslims to the Christians, and demonize Christians to the Moors.

Mrs. Smith, have you read the Koran? It is as violent as the cult it inspires. It preaches death.

Mahomet (an older, alternate form of the name)

Not really, Mahomet is a European way of trying to pronounce a non-European name. his name was Muhammed. In Arabic the pronunciation would be "Mow hum mud". And you are correct his first wife was 20 odd years older them him and was a rich heiress (the reason for the marriage). And his last wife Aisha was 6 when they married and 9 when he uh consummated this marriage. Which was no big deal since he promised his followers 72 perpetual virgins (which means that they could be deflowered again and again) and 18 young nubile boys...

Islam has been responsible for more death and destruction on the face of the planet than just about anything else since the last asteroid impact."

True, Islam has killed probably 100 million Christians in the past 15 centuries and probably 150 million Hindus and millions of animists, Buddhists and others.

Bud, a simple question -- have you read the Koran?

You say Your radical fundamentalism against Muslims is the same as Osama's and Al-Sadr's radical fundamentalism against non-Muslims.

Nope, I'm not anti-Musslim. I am anti-slam. Hate the sin, not the sinner I say.

Some do, most don't. There are as many varieties of Christianity as there are of Islam.

Anyone who can equate Islam with Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, or just about any other major religion is either a complete blithering idiot or a pathological liar.

Well, it seems to me that it's really up to us how we transliterate it.

I prefer the older Mahomet and Mahommetans or Mohamad and Moslem to the more currently fashionable Muhammed and Muslim.

Sort of like Chinese, where I still use the older Wade-Giles transliterations (e.g. Mao "Tse Tung" rather than the newer "Zedong" form). Just call me old fashioned. I think it's also useful to indicate that one's views are not so politically correct, but harken back to an earlier era when our views of the Middle East and the followers of Mahomets Moon God were considerably clearer and more accurate than the current politically correct line.

I didn't equate Islam with Christianity. I said there are many different varieties of Islam, which is true, and there are many different varieties of Christianity, which is also true. I am not an idiot or a liar, but I suspect you may be the former.

Not often enough.. I hope you don't think I am defending Islam. My only point was that religious clerics are often extremely radical. These are real religious clerics who advocate violence and martyrdom in the name of God. Christian clerics are not nearly so radical these days but they have had their moments in the past.

"Actually ultra religious people have traditionally been among the most radical people of any society. Anyone who can convince people to kill, or die in the name of God has to be considered pretty radical. Jim Jones, David Koresh, or just about any cult leader you can think of, all clerics of one sort or another, and all radical in a very insane way. "

These are your own words. I took them to mean that the problem is ultrareligious people in general, not Islam in particular. This ignores the fact that ultrareligious people in every major religion tend to be strict pacifists. Except Islam, where the more religious, the more violent or prone to promote violence.

Or more directly, you can count bodies. The major religions except Islam have nowhere near the body count of either secular government or Islam.

Quit parroting Dan Rather and you won't sound so ignorant.

"Mrs. Smith, have you read the Koran? "

Have you read it more acurately than you read my user name?
(Just kidding...)

Look, let's try applying the pharisee's prayer here:

"Lord I am glad I'm a good Christian and not like these bloodthirsty Moslems so I can righteously kill them all for thinking they can righteously kill me!"

We got enough trouble with real Moslems for real reasons.

Ah come on, you don't think every Moslem wants to kill you.

I once saw some quotes from the Soviet era about playing religions against each other. I guess I'll have to see if I can find them again.

I don't imagine the Chinese have been stupid enough to say something recently in that line, though their present behavior could be based on the concept.

Actually it's not about being politically correct but about pronouncing it correctly. I've heard folks pronouncing Kuala Lumpur as Coola LUMP purr when it's actually Koala (like the bear) LUM poorr

True, Christian clerics have been radical in the past, but the New Testament did not sanction this. The Koran, on the contrary DOES sanction such acts as being in the greater glory of Alllah.

Ok, MR Smith, have you read the Koran? What part of
"Kill the mushriqeen (pagans, polytheists, kuffar) where ever you find them." [Al-Qur’an 9:5]

Do YOU think can be read any other way? The Koran goes even as far as to declare about Abraham: "No: Abraham in truth was not a Jew, neither a Christian; but he was a Muslim and one pure of faith; certainly he was never of the idolators." (III - The House of Imran: 60)

"...And he brought down those of the People of the Book who supported them from their fortresses and cast terror in their hearts; some you slew, some you made captive. And He bequeathed upon you their lands, their habitations, and their possessions, and a land you never trod. Allah is powerful over everything." (XXXIII - The Confederates: 25)
