Well, it seems to me that it's really up to us how we transliterate it.

I prefer the older Mahomet and Mahommetans or Mohamad and Moslem to the more currently fashionable Muhammed and Muslim.

Sort of like Chinese, where I still use the older Wade-Giles transliterations (e.g. Mao "Tse Tung" rather than the newer "Zedong" form). Just call me old fashioned. I think it's also useful to indicate that one's views are not so politically correct, but harken back to an earlier era when our views of the Middle East and the followers of Mahomets Moon God were considerably clearer and more accurate than the current politically correct line.

Actually it's not about being politically correct but about pronouncing it correctly. I've heard folks pronouncing Kuala Lumpur as Coola LUMP purr when it's actually Koala (like the bear) LUM poorr
