The Hobbit Hole VII - But not yet weary are our feet...
Posted on 03/15/2004 1:45:41 PM PST by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
But not yet weary are our feet...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Yes, but I think McCaffrey outsources her writing to India these days. Some of it's good, but really, yet another Acorna book? And the last two Pern novels were really lousy. IMO, she hasn't written a really good story since
Masterharper of Pern That said, I have all but the latest Pern novel. And have read most of her other stuff... she tends to go on with a series too long. "Rowan" and "Damia" were great ( I thought "The Rowan" was vey romantic) but the sequels were boring.
I'll second the Pern recommendation anyway, although again, the sex (more in the later volumes) gets old. Still... dragons, mmm... telepathic dragons and really handsome dragonriders...

I liked the Deryni novels, except for this last one. And all of David Eddings.

All right, I'm just... perhaps unfairly... prejudiced against the section of the bookstore where the spines are pink, the covers show half-naked people, and the titles are like "Her Boss's Obsession".
I am certain the series you mention must be good. I might even try it if I can find it at the library. (Gasp! I don't really like romantic stuff! It kind of embarrasses me to read!) But your description of it sounds enticing.
I think I've gotten so defensive over the brain-candy I do read (SF and fantasy, not a girl's reading material in most people's eyes) that I automatically have to discount any other genre as being good. Though I'm very fond of a good mystery or historical fiction...

David Eddings is a really guilty pleasure. Unfortunately, he writes the same story over and over again. (I mean, he even has the same plot devices! You can map character to character... 'yup, this one's Polgara, and Elana is C'Nedra with an attitude adjustment)
I like Sparhawk a lot though. He's cool. Much cooler than Garion, though "The Belgariad" was better than "The Elenium", in general. I also like "The Redemption of Althalus". But I haven't tried the new one - "Elder Gods", or something like that?
Haven't read any of the Deryni novels.

Jen, have you read The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress? I can highly recommend that one ... he only advocates various forms of polygamy, and implies miscegnation in that one ...!

No, but I do see the word "sex" on the cover!
Just kidding. Looks interesting. May have to try it... or at least read the back cover.

I like being half nekkid... you live in south Florida - surely you don't like being all covered up all the time. But, I don't do pink. Maybe green spikes.

Yep, love Moon is a Harsh Mistress! Miscegnation... huh, guess that was a real issue back when he wrote it! Good for him! And the polygamy thing... kinda worked, in context. Plus, I love Mike.

Um... no?Aha! I have broken your Dark Lord monopoly! :) Baron Karza was the Micronauts' version of Darth Vader, and actually looked remarkably like Vader and came out the same year, apparently independently by virtue of both drawing from the same Japanese villains. So you can add Karza to the list of Dark Lords :)
