The Hobbit Hole VII - But not yet weary are our feet...

Posted on 03/15/2004 1:45:41 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

But not yet weary are our feet...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

What a cute little torque wrench.

Wow, I've not seen one that small before.

That sounds like what you get if you combine a Dark Lord with a former Smeagol :)

Oooh, ooh! Dark Lord! "Dark Lord of Derkholm", Dianna Wynne Jones. Technically, it's a young adult novel. It's also a brilliant piece... sendup of a lot of the fantasy genre. She's got a book called "Tough Guide to Fantasyland" that is one of my two references when writing a fantasy story - mostly on what's cliched beyond all reason. (The other is the Evil Overlord's List, you know that, sure?)

I don't read romance novels. The sex scenes in fantasy stories is as graphic as it gets.

Um... all right, so I'm showing my lack of experience again, but this time it's really OK!

No, don't know those, either :) (I guess I'm barred from the next GenCon now, in addition to having my geek credentials revoked earlier today :) I was just talking about combining the Dark Lord Sauron with "Gollum" to get "Sarum" :) Guess I'd better brush up on my Dark Lords. . .

Hey, I bet I know at least one Dark Lord you don't :) Ever heard of Baron Karza?

But there are chapters I just can't read because it's all graphic sex.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

Some romance novels are purely bad plots with racy sex scenes in them, but others are really terrific. Like the one I was talking to Rose about the other night - Outlander by Diana Gabaldon.

You'd love it since it does involve time travel and Scottish legends and history. It's my all time favorite series! The romance is actually a subplot, but the characters are so well-developed, you start to just love them like real people.

Rosie, let me recommend Anne McCaffrey to you, if you haven't read her before. She has several series, but I think you would like the Pegasus short story collections/novels, and the follow-on Federated IT&T series (IT&T standing for Interstellar Telepath and Telekinetic).

Of course, she also has her Pern stuff, and the Ship Who Sang series, some of the most imaginative stuff I've read. And there's the Crystal Singer series, and the Acorna series, and the Doona series ...

You know, you don't really understand how prolific an author Anne McCaffrey is until you start listing her series!

I didn't say it was a bad thing... Honestly, I only remember two sex scenes from the whole series of books. I know there were more, I just don't remember them.

ROFL. I've got a couple of pin vises which make that torque wrench look HUGH.
