The Hobbit Hole VII - But not yet weary are our feet...
Posted on 03/15/2004 1:45:41 PM PST by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
But not yet weary are our feet...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Good morning!
I didn't really have computer access at home last night. Boy...that was painful. I ordered a new power adapter for my 'puter and should hopefully have that by next week, but I'm gonna see if I can borrow one from work for a few days until that comes in.
Mostly just read instead of Freeping, which I suppose is good for me...some of the time, at least.
Thenewdog had two accidents already today. Seemed like things were going soooo well, and then...
At least he's very small.

Good morning! I was wondering where you were last night. Though reading is good, of course.

Yep. I'm rereading Jules Verne's
Mysterious Island, which is pretty good if a bit overdramatic at times. Typical Verne, I guess.
I also have a book that I just picked up, which is his continuation of the story of Swiss Family Robinson...hmmm...who woulda thought that Jules Verne would write fanfic? I may read that next, if I'm not all Verned out for awhile.

Huh... Mysterious Island wasn't nearly as good as 2000 Leagues Under the Sea.
My favorite Verne is Around the World in 80 Days. Great book! Though Journey to the Center of the Earth is great, too.
Didn't know about the fanfic. But then again, Swiss Family Robinson could be considered fanfic... Robinson Cruseo spawned a subgenre called 'Robinsonades' - something like that - and "Swiss Family Robinson" was just the best of them.

Huh... Mysterious Island wasn't nearly as good as 2000 Leagues Under the Sea. I disagree...I found all the stuff about making things from what was on the island fascinating...as well as the whole mystery. I like 'em both...but Mysterious Island is awfully good.
Journey to the Center of the Earth may be my favorite, though. Didn't care as much for Around the World for some reason. It's been awhile since I read it, though. Maybe I'll go on a Verne binge for awhile.

Really? Around the World is one my mom read aloud to us. I remember listening to her describe all the fabulous places.... I thought it was hilarious. Haven't read it in a while and I'm wondering if it may have been a very dry satire. Phineas Fogg and his servant (can't spell the name) were really almost cariactures...

Mom read Journey to the Center of the Earth and Mysterious Island and (if I remember right) 2000 Leagues to us...I think I read Around the World on my own and didn't really care for the characters. As I said, I probably need to re-read it.
Whereas...I can STILL remember how fascinated I was by process the people in Mysterious Island went through in attempting to make gun powder...and how the dog learned to climb ladders...and how the engineer made a magnifying glass with two watch faces held together with clay, with water in between and used it to make a fire...and how one of them had malaria and the whole mystery of how they were helped whenever things seemed to be hopeless. And it must have been fifteen years ago or more when Mom read it.
I dunno...the whole idea of being stranded somewhere has always been interesting to me, and the fact that they started out with nothing but what they were wearing was a still more interesting twist. Didn't have so much as a knife at first.

Good morning Sam! You've been missed around here! What's new?
Anybody hear anything about the missing boy in Texas? WN, you there?
ecurbh and hair - nice profile page and nice registry. Sorry I can't afford the TV, but I'll be perusing it during lunch to see what I might surprise you guys with. *grinning*

It was cool earlier, but I expect it'll be up to around 80 or so in a little while. How is it in Pittsburgh, Jen?

Dreary and cool. Going to get up to 53 today. We had sun yesterday but the rest of the week is nasty weather.

I got those already!! ;-)
I had a bit of a scare because my mom has decided to join her friend on a cruise to Alaska and they are leaving on the day of your wedding and won't be back for a week. I thought I may have to return earlier (which still may come into play), but my sister said that she'd pick up the slack and watch the girls until I get back on Tuesday.
