The Hobbit Hole VII - But not yet weary are our feet...

Posted on 03/15/2004 1:45:41 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

But not yet weary are our feet...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Yeah...it really doesn't taste as good as sugar...but Steve could hardly tie his shoes! LOL He had to do something, and this tastes better than the rest.

Stevia doesn't even taste like sugar AT ALL...but still, it's sweet! Really strange.

Ok, it's time!

*DOUGHBOY UPDATE* (Doughboy Theme Song)

Well, he rolled out of the house about 3pm whereabouts he and his buddies proceeded to drink a lot of beer, pour cement down the center of the cinderblocks and make fun of my garden... the jerk.

For the record, here's a pic (if you open it in another window it'll be full size):

1. To the left of the number one is the pile of gravel he wrasteled, above and to the left is the large piece of lumber that has been laying about in various locations since we moved in. There is also a trench dug at the uphill edge of the gravel pile. This is where I believe the front of the shed will be.

2. This is either a spare block or a footer at the midpoint of the shed. This is also about where the silt fence used to be. It's only supposed to come down once a good lawn has been established. The dark streak to the right is the trench/pile of dirt where he ripped his out of the ground. This area is the lowest point in his yard where all of his runoff runs into our yard.

3. This is the shovel that he keeps lying about.

4. The magic footer. It is seven blocks high. The hole in the ground is about 12 inches deep (1.5 blocks' worth). No rebar in the middle of the stack and no footer underneath- just a shovel full of stolen gravel. No mortar either, just some quickset mixed with some stolen gravel down the middle. There are three other footers like this, only not as tall. A second one can be seen by #3, the other two are out of the view to the left. Yes, it is leaning- tho this is exaggerated slightly by the zoom lens on the camera.

5. This is the fancy-shmancy sight level used to level everything. Bwahahaaaaaa.

I'm gonna call the county again tomorrow- just fer making fun of my garden. Grrr

I don't know...I'm a moron.

No, honey, you're not! It's going off that caffeine; it's messin with your mind! LOL!

We cut down on our caffeine a long time ago. Now when I do a pot of coffee, it's 4 scoops decaf and 2 scoops regular. We'll have a pot of that or maybe two, in the morning. If we want any more in the evening, it's a flavored decaf. My favorite is Cinnamon-Hazelnut!

Just can't stand the taste of artificial sweeteners. I can bear aspartame and Splenda, but I don't like it. Saccharin gets spit out.

Most of my sugar intake is in slightly sweetened ice tea, coffee, and hot chocolate.

Ok! This weekend's work is finished:

Will stake out and plant cool crops later this week. I'm also going to plant marigolds and other plants in the cinderblock holes.

I'm quite pleased with myself. It's another ibuprofin night. I'm gonna be really, really sore. The stuff doesn't look so heavy in the picture- lol! Maybe I should just get in shape.

Oh and Big'ol got to mow his new lawn (not pictured) with his lawnmower today. Yes, it's still a novelty for us.

I love it!! You could fill every one of those little holes in the cinder blocks with potting soil and put flowers in them...like marigolds! Marigolds are great "companion plants" (it's mentioned in the book).

Those blocks are HEAVY!

I'm so glad I got to see it...I am just logging off to get these wings cooked! Good job!

See you all later!

He only lost 2 pounds this week, but he's not discouraged.

My friend on Atkins lost about 50 pounds pretty quickly but after that it levelled off to about 2 a week. I don't know if that's typical or what.

Can't wait to see the mountain pictures! So does it look like a go?

David was in Austin this weekend; can't wait to find out how it went! He got a admission letter this week from UT Austin, but maybe they did that as a matter of course so he'll know he's accepted.

Nice Square Foot setup there! It is really a fun method. We did that when we lived in NJ.

Really? Can I pick your brain a second- how did you deal with deer?

That's what those beer-guzzling clymers were laughing about. "Deer'll eat that all pretty quick..."

Since I'm on a dialup, your comments are appearing first, then the pictures start to trickle in. At first, I couldn't tell if you were talkin' about ecurbh or Bay. :)
