The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Good morning, Morning crew!

Vet coming here today for Bay's checkup. I am expecting good news, he has seemed really strong and ready to go this spring. I think the first level treatment for his feet, the oral pills, is working, and still working. I think level two, which was injections to his foot, can wait.

I'm running on an mp3 player on my work PC. (that I really hate) I launched winamp. Clicked on the link on the Celtic Grove website which brought up a dialogue box asking if I wanted to open or save the file. I chose save, and then opened it from within winamp. It's the only way I can get streams at work to work.

They have these machines so locked down that I can modify exactly two folders: my desktop and "my documents". This morning when I had to change my password the blasted machine told me I didn't "have permission to change my password" and I had to call the help desk so they could reset it for me! Did I mention I hate this machine?

We're going to a lovely St. Paddy's dinner that'll have a nice band. I'm really looking forward to it. (Break a leg and all that good stuff.)

Now, how do we educate kids about it WM? I'm surprised at the insignificant level of knowledge my students have about government of any form. It's as though government and history weren't being taught them at all. This knowledge base is critical to an individual understanding consequences of elections, legal decisions and enactment of laws.

I am not surprised at all that students are clueless regarding government. They don't get it at home because their parents are ambivalent, and what they get at school is window dressing. I mean, here, they get civics in what 7th grade? and a semester of government in their senior year of high school. As if that is enough to prepare them!

In addition, I remember doing current events daily. These days, current events consists of entertainment news. Not the real stuff. Newspapers and news reporting in general have deteriorated beyond reconition in many cases. I don't think kids even watch the news anymore, much less are in general literate enough to read the newspapers and get the significant news out of 'em.

Well..... It is a degenerative old-age joint disease. The only goal here is prolonging his working life, and after that, his comfortable retirement. He won't get 'better' prolly than he is today.

A suggestion: The Founding Fathers arrived at the idea of the separation of powers from the experience of seeing what it was like when all the power was invested in one branch of government under the absolutist kings of the 17th-18th centuries. Maybe reviewing the abuses of earlier one-branch systems would help students appreciate where the Founding Fathers were coming from on that.

That would definitely be a start, but, IMO not enough since the kiddos don't have any ties to history. The connection we all have with history is lost on them because they have grown up with instant gratification, and have no memory of what it really means to lose freedom. Parental discipline and getting grounded isn't a strong enough incentive to learn about history.

I just have this nagging feeling that we can teach it but they won't receive it because of the degree to which the society as a whole has withered.

I honestly feel that more intervention needs to be done at a basic level. Not just teach kids about government and history of the founding fathers in high school, but initiate civic duty from Kinderarten on, even if it is just a mock election to start. Shoot, I remember having mock elections every time there was a real election, when I was little. Then again, I am also a product of the grand experiment ~open clasrooms~ that was abandoned because teachers had too much difficulty managing a class without walls. (My teachers did just fine, and in fact were quite good at it.)

*sigh* I ramble.

I picked a lousy day to cut down on the carbs! LOL

I don't like most of the cookies from the company the Girl Scouts are using as much as the ones from the previous company, but I DO love their Animal Treasures. They are shortbread cookies (lembas) with a chocolate bottom. YUM stuff!

We got civic duty education - but we were homeschooled... a candidate for State Rep called our house last night and I talked to him for a while, seems someone told him there are three Republican conservatives who vote in primaries living there (should be four but my sister doesn't bother to get an absentee ballot. Slacker). He knew all our hot-button topics and it was very interesting for me - I haven't got political sales calls before.

Heh, he's got my vote. I think I've heard certain politicians are focusing on homeschooled kids when they need campaign work done, because we're motivated and a little better educated than the average.

Yeah, I was thinking when I posted that homeschoolers probably are ahead of the game when it comes to government education and civic duty. Didn't finish my thought because I need to get going soon. Elf-boy is still sleeping, I need to get my shower, and we hafta get giogn here pretty soon, cuz I need o be somewhere at 9:00 (in an hour).

giogn

funny thing about typos... I always make the same typos over and over. I almost always spell going the way it is shown above. I guess I should have learned to type instead of hunt and peck and break neck speed.

Heh, I don't use a proper typing method (slightly better than hunt and peck) but who cares, it gets the job done.

Typos in code are nasty, nasty things though.

Tzadziki

I think I've had this. Gonna copy down the recipe, in any case. Makes my mouth water just looking at it.

I LOVE tabouli. I can live on the stuff for weeks at a time. I should make some now that it's not quite so cold! I especially like it with a dollop of plain yogurt, which sounds kinda weird but is ohhh so good! So are a few sliced black olives, if you like such things. I love 'em.

I think I'm just gonna run out at lunch and buy some pita bread. I brought hummus and yogurt and such to eat with 'em for lunch. Yum!
