The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

Posted on 01/31/2004 9:52:08 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

I think that the Gay Lobby will find that this was their own "bridge too far". I think there may be a backlash that may set them back some years.

I agree; but my fear then is what's going to happen when the generation of kids they've brainwashed over the past decade grows up and reaches voting age? If we're really going to set them back we've got to beat them back on that cultural front, too. I think there needs to be another "Hollywood Ten" type of crackdown on the media. Getting Disney out of Eisner's hands is a good step.

Agreed on the kids.

I was pretty pleasantly surprised at the beginning of our war on terrorism that most of my students understood the issues and supported the war and our president. However, on this gay "marriage" issue, I only have a small percentage of strongly Christian students who find anything wrong with the issue. Even students from more moderately Christian homes think this gay union stuff is right. And of course, most of the students have no set of core values at all and they think it's great! They view my opinions on the issue as either old-fashioned or right-wing Christian. Not opinions they place any value on. It's a tough one. Its gotta change or like you said, their generation will not guard our foundational values.

Looks like our #2 is seriesly considering UT Austin for Grad school! He'll be down there the last weekend in March to check the place out. He's going over to UMass Amherst this Friday.

Great news! :) What field is he going into?

That's scary how many students that age feel that way. I hope something can be done about that.

Well, when I was that age, my ideas weren't exactly what they are now. And yet, I do know that I had a firm background from which to draw my beliefs at a later time in life. I am just concerned at the number of students who don't have that same background. I don't think they're getting it from parents. And I know they aren't getting it at school. I got it both places. *sigh*

Okay, Ruthy and I will be showing up on your doorstep on June 17. :-)

If we can find your doorstep! Don't want to get off in one of those *wrong* neighborhoods!

Lke I said, "gay marriage" is just one front on the war against America. It's serious in and of itself, but it's also a trial run at a coup, just like the nazis came to power without (significant) violence.

All the words of the Constitution would remain the same, but there would be general agreement that things are done exactly the opposite of what the Constitution says. "Checks and balances" would break down totally, because all the surviving parties would agree behind closed doors on how to proceed. On paper, both the nazi and the soviet constitutions sounded like noble documents. But everyone knew they were just window dressing for like-minded people who would rule as they damn well pleased.

Agreed.

Now, how do we educate kids about it WM? I'm surprised at the insignificant level of knowledge my students have about government of any form. It's as though government and history weren't being taught them at all. This knowledge base is critical to an individual understanding consequences of elections, legal decisions and enactment of laws.

Our society now is dominated by two large segments with little in common between them. Many forces pulling apart...and few left holding them together. The gap on this issue is not bridgeable -- the forces are larger, and we are much further down the road than during the abortion debates. Almost no one is left out of this arguement -- and this one issue is the big bright banner on top of what is now a plethora of left/right fights. The left will keep pushing, even past the breaking point. We're getting close to serious civil strife.

Agreed--it's a recent prong in a longer-term attack that began, I'd say, at least back in the 1930s, when they started infiltrating the judicial branch en masse. If they win on this front they'll start using that leverage to push for the other goals the UN wants to impose on the US.

A suggestion: The Founding Fathers arrived at the idea of the separation of powers from the experience of seeing what it was like when all the power was invested in one branch of government under the absolutist kings of the 17th-18th centuries. Maybe reviewing the abuses of earlier one-branch systems would help students appreciate where the Founding Fathers were coming from on that.

He's thinking if he can find a place close to a grocery store, or close to a bus that can take him to a grocery store he'll be ok. The boy likes his vittles!

We've about got him convinced that staying home this summer doing manual labor is a good idea. ;o) We'll pay him for working, and he'll get free room and board and use of a car. Can't beat that with a STICK!

Sounds like a good plan to me Suzi! I lived in family student housing right across from a large grocery store and on the bus route. It was maybe 7 or 8 miles from campus but with the bus and store I didn't need to worry about that. The place I worked was also 1 block off the bus route. I had a car. I just didn't see the need to use it when I knew I couldn't find parking around campus anyway.

Like I said, things may have changed now. But, he can see when he visits.

Not exactly sure. He had a double major in Computer Science and Psychology (Cognitive). He's interested in Human Computer Interaction.

Oh, downtown Austin is bike heaven! Bike lanes, bike racks on the front of the buses .... heck, there are even city-owned loaner bikes, painted acid yellow and carried on the fronts of the buses, that anyone can use at any time.

Austin is Libby heaven ... watch for them to come out with their own gay marriage declaration in the next few days, after tomorrow's election.

Having said that, the northern part of Austin, and Williamson County, is Conservative-ville. We're having an election tomorrow, and the campaign signs are crowded at every intersection up here. You can easily tell the Dim-bulbs from the Pubbs ... the Republicans' signs say "Republican" in big letters, and the Democrats' signs are innocent of party affiliation. One guy, whose signs are blue with white lettering, has taken to sticking bright yellow "Pro-Gun" and "Pro-Life" labels on his signs.

Ah, Austin is a wacky place ...!

One of the first things we have to do it TAKE BACK THE LANGUAGE! I don't ever use the term 'gay' to describe that lifestyle because it is anything but! I use the term homosexual , and homosexual unions. What they want is NOT marriage and never will be. GAY means happy or lighthearted. SSQ and I have had a GAY marriage for over 28 years, and God willing will continue on for many more.

If we all begin to do that, maybe folks will notice.
