No, he doesn't have matches, he can make fire because Kathy is wearing glasses. He's the only one to have realized it, apparently.

I've had a chance to think about it, and in reflection, I think the tribe made the best choice nailing out Tina in the first vote. Since they don't have fire and don't, by extension, have water, she was the logical person to vote out because she is the least physically fit out of the group.

I'm not sure if there is strategy in not making fire or not, but it seems like there is, aside from Hatch's stated plan. Three tribes, 18 people who have played the game before, and not one can get flames? I don't buy it. I think a lot of players are hoping to nail out the 'weaker' players as quickly as possible.

I did notice that Rupert was building a spear during one segment, and if rumors are to be believed, he is on one of the islands that has a good supply of fish in the bay. With the mask, as soon as fire is provided, I think he can keep them fed -- or maybe just he and Rudy will enjoy meals.

I'm looking forward to see what twists Probst throws in to the game. All in all, even with the guy showing his hatch, it looks to be an enjoyable season.

So, after people are dying for a drink and before the immunity challenge, why doesn't he make fire? Be the big hero instead of obnoxious schmuck? I don't get it!

Rupert: Good strategy, or big mistake? I'm torn. I hate Jerri and Jenna and they won't be loyal to him. But if very many people want to kick off the winners he'd have been screwed going to a merge with Tina and Ethan as his friends.

I love how absolutely paranoid everyone is!

Who do you want to drag to the final two if you can? Someone who is nice and helpful and needs the money, or an obnoxious jerk who is arrogant and has already won a million dollars and everybody is wanting to make sure doesn't win? He is positioning himself to go as far as this current "persona" will take him. Then he will switch. Of course, times have changed in the mentality of Survivor players since he won the first one, and he is going against some players who have gone as far as he has and several others who have gotten very close. So Hatch may think he has control this time, but as was said last night, he isn't a wolf playing with sheep this time. Everyone of these players are wolves.

Ken,

Your lucky day. CBS will be replaying the first episode Tuesday night, according to promos that came after the show last night.

I thoroughly enjoy the cast of characters. However, this lack of fire thing kinda irks me. I saw Rudy tried to get a bow and stick friction thing going, but whe the string came off the bow, they gave up on that. Isn't that the best way to get a fire going from scratch??

I also wonder about the glasses thing. Kathy has 'em, and I remember Ethan wore glasses in Africa. It's possible that the producers are not allowing them to use glasses assist in the firemaking.

Anyway, I hope they all get fire so they can move on to other things. It's all good, though, IMO.

The best way to get a fire going in their case would to use a inch thick stick that had been whittled to a point.

Put the point into a carved divet in a larger piece of wood with a small pile of tender very close by.

Get about six feet of narrow rope and wrap it about 6 times tightly around the center of the stick.

Have 2 of the tribesmates hold opposite ends of the rope, wrapping the extra rope around their hands for a firm grip, while a third uses a flat rock to apply pressure from above.

The two with the rope then begin "sawing" as fast as they can at a steady pace.

A fourth tribesmate would be in charge of covering the friction hole with tender as soon as a significant amount of smoke appears and begin blowing slowly and steadily across the top of the hole to provide air flow.

Once flames appear, add more tender and carefully remove the stick.

Fire.

Episode 1 Summary from CBS's website:

With a Panamanian military escort, three motorboats shot across the sea, each holding a tribe of castaways from SURVIVORs past: All-Star Survivors. The eighteen people were divided into three tribes named Saboga, Mogo Mogo and Chapera. The All-Stars were given nothing but their water canteens. They were not told the names of the other castaways or how many tribes there were. Armed with no information, no fire and no help, these eighteen All-Stars would be challenged once again to outwit, outlast and outplay one another in order to see who will become the Sole Survivor.

After a top-secret journey through Panamanian waters, the three tribes were dropped off in the rough terrain that would become their camps. They were given maps, then sent off to fend for themselves.

As the Chapera tribe made their way through the brush, they came upon a well filled with contaminated water that would need to be boiled. Disorganized, the tribe focused on where to build their shelter. "It wasn't five minutes; there was six ideas on how to do everything," laughed Tom Buchanan, the 48-year-old castaway of SURVIVOR: AFRICA from Rich Valley, Virginia.

It didn't take much time for the alliances to start within Mogo Mogo. Paranoia ran deep as the tribe set up their camp. Members were quick to break away from each other while whispers abounded. It all ended with a mutual agreement that nobody trusted anybody else, and all alliances would wait until camp was set up. Upon seeing a naked Richard Hatch, Shii Ann Huang, the 30-year-old tribe member of SURVIVOR: THAILAND from New York City, commented, "This is off to an interesting start."

Dehydrated, the Chapera tribe desperately needed fire in order to boil their water. As the members of the tribe worked feverishly to ignite a flame, Sue Hawk, the 42-year-old castaway of SURVIVOR: PULAU TIGA BORNEO from Palmyra, Wisconsin, announced that this was a task she would take no part in. Instead, Sue decided to put her life at risk by drinking the contaminated water without boiling it. Sue's actions immediately alienated the rest of tribe.

Over at the Saboga camp, efforts to ignite a fire were also in vain. Finding themselves alone for the first time, Rudy Boesch, the 76-year-old castaway of SURVIVOR: PULAU TIGA BORNEO, from Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Rupert Boneham, the 40-year-old of SURVIVOR: PEARL ISLANDS PANAMA from Indianapolis, Indiana, wasted no time in forming an alliance.

After a brutal night's sleep at the Chapera camp, tempers flared as Alicia Calaway, the 35-year-old of SURVIVOR: THE AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK from Trumbull, Connecticut and Rob Mariano, the 28-year-old of SURVIVOR: MARQUESAS from Canton, Massachusetts, squabbled over whether to work on the fire or on shelter. Shortly after the fight, Rob created an alliance with Amber Brkich, the 25-year-old of SURVIVOR: THE AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK from Beaver, Pennsylvania. "She's beautiful, obviously; any idiot can see that. But I'll keep my word no matter what to her. I trust her; I don't think she's going to screw me," mused Rob.

As the tribes converged for the first Immunity Challenge, of SURVIVOR: ALL-STARS, the castaways got the first glimpse of their competitors. All were surprised to see three tribes instead of the standard two.

With a nod to history, host Jeff Probst explained that this Challenge was the same as the first-ever SURVIVOR Challenge from Pulau Tiga, Borneo. The castaways would start on floating platforms, where they would have to dive down and release their raft from a mooring on the bottom of the ocean floor. They would then have to transport fire torches on their raft to the beach, lighting torches along the way. The first two tribes to light the torches, bring their rafts to the beach and climb under a bamboo crawl would win Immunity.

The Challenge started off with a bang as Richard Hatch, the 42-year-old winner of SURVIVOR: PULAU TIGA BORNEO from Middletown, Rhode Island, disrobed in order to do the Challenge naked. Chapera took an early lead.

Rupert caused his tribe to fall behind when he mistakenly dove to release the raft that was already free. Chapera and Mogo Mogo were neck and neck, while Saboga trailed both.

Fatigue set in as Saboga closed the gap. But it was too little, too late as both Chapera and Mogo Mogo made it underneath their crawl, thus securing the first Immunity of SURVIVOR: ALL-STARS. Saboga was sent back to camp with the unpleasant task of having to vote a member out.

As soon as the Saboga tribe returned from losing the Challenge, the wheeling and dealing commenced. Jenna Lewis, the 26-year-old castaway of SURVIVOR: PULAU TIGA BORNEO from Franklin, New Hampshire, lobbied the alliance of Rupert and Rudy to vote off either Ethan Zohn, winner of SURVIVOR: AFRICA; or Tina Wesson, because they both had already earned the coveted title of Sole Survivor. Ethan lobbied Rupert while they were in the water, arguing that it would be strategically wise to keep a winner around in order to guarantee a Final Two victory against them.

As the tribe headed off to Tribal Council, it was obvious that the Rupert/Rudy alliance would decide who goes home. "Hopefully, we can pull Rupert in and kinda surprise everybody tonight," wished previous Sole Survivor Tina Wesson.

In the end, Tina's wish did not come true, as it was, in fact, a winner from a previous SURVIVOR who ended up as the target. The Rupert/Rudy alliance swung the vote, thus sending Tina Wesson home in a four-to-two decision. Tina became the first castaway voted out of SURVIVOR: ALL-STARS.

My personal strategy would be to bring past winners as far as the merge and then stack the jury with them. If one of the past winners made it with me to the final two, I'd expect that the past winners on the jury would vote against them, because I don't think that any past winner would imagine that the victory by any other past winner was deserved. Most of these people have egos that would put the average politician to shame.

Hey Survivor Phreeks!

The rumor mill has SeeBS REBROADCASTING the season opener tomorrow night (That’s Tuesday for those in Rio Linda) at 8:00pm.
So out of difference to those who had the good sense to GET SOME SLEEP last night, I’ll withhold my re-cap till Wednesday. :~D

BTW, All I’m gonna say about last night’s game is that Carolina’s head coach needs his mouth washed out with soap. Even my grandson could read his lips well enough to tell me he said “a bad word” on more than one occasion.

Take care all, and I’ll see ya Wednesday.

As I wrote herea week or so ago, Tina is the sneakiest most dangerous player in the game....and for that reason, the one to vote out at first opportunity. U saw her on Fox news this morning.....there's nothing weak about her. She's a powerhouse. She's slim, has that pale fragile looking skin and hair...but sometimes people with that configuration can lift trucks with one hand and go without food water sleep and everything else interminably. I'm glad she went before she could start weaving her clever little webs.

Hi everybody.
I’m afraid that I have some bad news.
Yesterday, Mrs. Cuz was informed by her doctor that she has cancer.
The good news is that he thinks that we have caught it in time and with surgery and aggressive treatment we will be able to stop it from spreading.
However, since most of my time and energy will be spent supporting and taking care of her, I will not be able to continue with the Survivor: All Stars Ping and recaps.
Hope everybody understands.
Here is the ping list if anybody wants to take over.
