Donut Shop Robber In Shootout With Cops Nov 24, 2003 2:30 pm US/Eastern

(1010 WINS) (NEWARK) Police and a man suspected of robbing a doughnut shop traded gunfire during a wild two-block chase Monday that included a gun battle on the staircase of an apartment building before the suspect was wounded.

Forence A. Turner, 32, of Newark, suffered a gunshot wound to the foot during the shootout that began at approximately 1:30 a.m. He was taken to University Hospital where he was being treated and released to police custody.

Off-duty Police Officer Tyrone Moore was driving into the parking lot of a Dunkin' Donuts store on Court Street when he saw a man walk out the door carrying a cash register drawer in one hand and a large-caliber handgun in the other, Detective Todd McClendon said.

Moore called police on his cell phone, and started following the suspect, who was on foot, in his personal vehicle.

A short distance away, the suspect ducked into some bushes and began removing cash from the register drawer. About $100 was taken during the robbery, police said.

Moore got out of his car, displayed his badge and identified himself as a police officer and ordered the suspect to drop his weapon. The suspect then opened fire on Moore from behind the bushes, prompting Moore to shoot back, McClendon said.

The suspect turned and started to flee, but then turned and fired at Moore again, who again shot back. Moore chased the suspect for two blocks as he was joined by another off-duty officer, Anthony Maldonado, who heard police radio reports of the shootout and responded to help Moore.

They chased the suspect into an apartment building on Washington Street, where the officers and the suspect traded gunfire on a staircase. The officers confronted the suspect in a second-floor hallway, and he pointed his gun at them before Maldonado fired a shot at him.

The suspect then dropped his gun and fell to the floor to surrender, McClendon said. Approximately 11 shots were fired by the officers and the suspect, Lt. Derek Glenn said.

The off-duty officers, along with on-duty officers who responded, subdued the suspect, who was then taken to the hospital by ambulance. His wound was believed to have been inflicted by Moore, police said.

Turner was charged with robbery, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and resisting arrest.

Yeah, but why didn't all the on-duty cops in the donut shop get involved?

Sheesh even a Libertarian would know not to rob a donut shop. After all, that's where the cops are 24/7 according to the Libertarians on FR.

On a serious note, I wonder how many New York and New Jersey Freepers have noticed the dramatic increase in shooting incidents in the New York City region over the last year or so.

At first I thought it was simply a case of an anti-gun media focusing so much attention on these incidents, but I've recently learned that this is a direct result of the decision by the state of New Jersey to stop any random vehicle stops on the New Jersey Turnpike by the NJ State Police.

Nah. Cops spend most of their time attempting to fill their revenue qoutas. It's sad that cops have been turned into tax (fines, traffic tickets, etc.) collectors for local governments.

The last time I was almost-mugged in Brooklyn I walked straight for the Dunkin Donuts a half-block away. Sure enough, there were two cops inside. The precinct was two blocks the other way, but I wanted a cop quick...

I was in a donut shop in Charleston, SC in 1988, with my then-girlfriend.

There must've been over two dozen cops in the place, doing change-of-shift paperwork. The lot was 100% cruisers--we had to park out on the street.

This crackhead wanders in, draws the pistol, fires one round into the ceiling and says, "THIS IS A STICK--"

He was dead before he hit the floor.

Robbing a doughnought shop is metaphorically shooting yourself in the foot.

By the way, isn't going to a doughnought shop automatic overtime for a cop?
